If you own a dog and have happened to be away from him for some time, then you have probably called and asked to talk to him at least once.

He may have reacted with excitement, wagging his tail, barking, and even whining. Or, maybe he was completely disinterested. Either can have been the case.

Now, the question is, can your dog recognize your voice when you’re on a call with him?

There is no definitive answer to this, and reactions of pups have been found to differ, with experts agreeing that your dog can most probably recognize your voice if they’re old enough but not too old. Still, they don’t seem to understand why they can only hear you and not see or smell you.

“They hear you, but know that you are missing; therefore, they aren’t sure where it is coming from. They may start whining, sniffing, and pacing as well because they cannot seem to locate you through smelling or seeing, yet they can hear your voice, so they are anxious and confused,” experts say.

One dog that confirms the hypothesis that our dogs can recognize our voice when we’re not there in person is Floyd.

The cute Bernese mountain dog used to live with his family, his human parents, and his human sister, Morgan, in Chicago.

But, when Morgan left her parental home to go to college in Texas, Floyd had to cope with the fact that he’d lost his favorite person for some time. Morgan knew that she was going to truly miss him, as well.

Floyd was safe and happy with the girl’s parents, but nothing could replace the bond he had with his human sister.

So, one day, Morgan was observing Floyd being on the house’s front porch, just doing his thing. And that’s when she had an idea. She’d start talking to him and see what happens.

Indeed, she called his name, and she immediately drew his attention.

“Hi, Floyd! Hi!” she can be heard saying. “Love you! You’re so cute!” she goes on.

Floyd looks perplexed at first, and then he realizes that the voice is coming from the doorbell camera. So, he approaches and starts licking it, as he would Morgan if she was really there.

“As you can tell from my laugh in the video, I was absolutely shocked that he finally found where the voice was coming from,” she says. “He is so smart he knew exactly where the camera was and decided to lick it like he usually licks my face.”

Then, the dog moves away, confused because he can hear Morgan but cannot see or smell her- such a disappointment, right?

Morgan keeps talking to him for a while, and Floyd does turn to look at the camera, but can’t really seem to understand what’s going on.

The cute doggie had a sweet moment with his favorite human, but we are sure he wanted to see her in person too. What a strong bond the two of them seem to have!
