Animals are abandoned and left to fend for themselves every day all over the world, but that doesn’t make the individual stories any less heartbreaking.
And the story of Blue Bayou broke our hearts wide open.
On her own
Earlier this year, the rescue organization Hope For Paws got a call about a dog on its own at an auto shop.
What’s worse is that she was just left behind by the owners of the shop 8 months ago when they moved out. It’s unclear what their relationship was with the dog, but that seems like it would have been a good time to give a quick call to animal control or a local shelter or rescue about the pup.
Hope for Paws rescuers JoAnn Wiltz and Katie McKittrick went to get her, but the poor dog clearly hadn’t had any good interactions with humans in a while. As a result, she was pretty uneager to be “rescued.”
But treats worked their magic to some extent.
Her rescuers were concerned the asphalt would burn her paws on a very hot day, so they tried to get her to a safer place. But the scared pup just wasn’t ready for much action yet and she hid under a trailer (though it at least gave her some shade).
But it’s hard to look at such a sad dog.
Finishing the mission
Luckily, she was in good hands and the women worked hard to coax her out. They told her everything was going to be ok.
But she had no reason to believe them…yet.
The dog froze in fear as soon as she saw hands coming toward her from her safe place.
Attempts to get a leash around her failed for quite a bit – she just wasn’t having it.
Eventually, they got her and pulled her out from under the car. She was fairly calm in the crate they loaded her into.
In the caption on her rescue video, Hope for Paws wrote:
“Katie and JoAnn handled this rescue beautifully… I know how challenging it is to get the gentle snare over the head of an animal under a car – it’s harder than it looks. After the rescue, Blue Bayou continued to L.A. Dog Works in Hollywood so she can learn to socialize with other dogs. She was isolated for so long, and I am so happy she really thrived there.”
Hope for a happily ever after
Blue Bayou is a sweet dog – and both rescuers seemed to notice right away that she had a lot of potential to be a loving pet.
Now, thanks to them, she’ll get that chance.
She might never love baths, but she’ll love her family and forever home someday soon.
With just a bit of love and TLC, she reacclimated to humans again and was willing to get some affection from her rescuers. And she got good socialization training from Andrew Rosenthal at LA Dogworks.
She started off the year playing a bad hand, but thankfully someone had enough compassion to call in some help for this pup and give her the chance at the happy ending she deserves.
When Hope for Paws posted the video on October 23, 2020, Blue Bayou was ready for her rescue home. And by all accounts, she’s found one. She’s no longer listed on the tsthepits.org website.
