There are fewer things in the world than watching a puppy go swimming for the first time. Especially when that puppy is a big, white, fluffy Samoyed named Milky!
Over 1 million people around the globe have watched the precious moment and you surely don’t want to miss out. The video starts as Milky is shown around the facilities, it seems to be a doggy daycare center with lots of other cute doggos for him to play with.
The owners and staff let Milkey get acquainted with the staff, the other dogs, and all the wonderful smells going on at the daycare facility. Then? It’s time to enter the pool! Before getting into the swimming pool, it’s mandatory for Milky to rinse off with a quick “shower,” just like us humans do.
The staff walks Milky out to the inviting blue pool, where there is a ramp for the pups to easily enter and submerge themselves.
Without hesitation, the adorable white Samoyed runs down the ramp and stops as soon as their paws hit the cool water. That’s when they have to stop for a moment and assess the situation a bit further. Once the water hits Milky’s legs, he shoots back up the ramp, not quite ready to go fully-submerged into the water.
‘Take two’ with the pup, and now, someone has gotten into the pool first – they’ll help Milky feel more comfortable when it comes to putting their entire body into the pool. And as it turns out? That was exactly what the sweet pup needed!
With little-to-no coaxing at all, Milky doesn’t hesitate to jump into the water once there is someone in there to help him!
With just a little bit of help with the human, Milky starts to instinctually paddle his adorable legs in the water. Soon enough – he’s off and swimming on his own! You can see the smile on his face and he navigates the water on his own for the very first time.
Taking a little break every now and again back at the dock and on a little floaty, Milky the Samoyed becomes comfier and comfier in the water as the time passes. It’s not long until the sweet dog is doing their very own laps around the pool!
According to the AKC, there are certain steps you can take to train your dog to swim.
“Start in shallow water with your dog on leash, ideally, where you too can enter the water. Wade in a few steps and encourage your dog to follow with some tasty treats. Reward him when he steps in the water, even if he only gets his toes wet. Gradually ask your dog to step further and further into the water until he has to start swimming to reach you,” they note.
Be sure to take the process gradually and in baby steps! You don’t want to overwhelm your dog with a scary, new skill that could potentially traumatize them.
