Cody is a gorgeous and lively border collie with an uncanny obsession with squirrels.
Ever since he was a puppy he’s eagerly chased, stared at and tried to befriend every squirrel he’s seen. Even though he’s now 13 years old, the passion is still there.
“He keeps an eye on the trees whenever he’s outside,” said Cody’s mom Christina York. “He has never come close to catching anything. I think his genetics kick in and he is just trying to herd them and keep them where he wants them with that border collie stare-down.”
If Cody can’t reach the squirrel he’s chasing, he’ll often go for the tree instead, trying to knock it down so he can get inside and catch it!
York watched on, amused by the games he’d play with them, day after day, year after year. Eventually she decided that she wanted him to know what it was like to catch his very own squirrel.
“With Cody turning 14 later this year, I’ve started a kind of bucket list for him,” York said. “Number one was to finally get that squirrel.”
Of course, she didn’t want to put a real animal through that kind of torment – so she began to search for a look-a-like toy online. She wanted it to be as realistic as possible so that Cody really thought he had achieved his goal. She finally found one that matched her needs and presented it to Cody. He was over the moon.
“For a few moments there, he was a puppy again – wagging his tail, patting his paws on the floor, swinging the squirrel by the tail around the room,” York said. “When he was done, the snuggling began. Everywhere. All day.”

Naturally, Cody has remained in love with his squirrel ever since. He never lets it out of his sight. York says he carries it around and cuddles with it in a very sweet and loving way.
After all this time we are so happy to see Cody finally get his squirrel!
“I think he feels pride and contentment with his ‘catch’ … perhaps he was just trying to catch a friend all along.”
