In June 2019, a good Samaritan was walking through the Puntzi Lake Landfill in British Columbia when they came across a sealed box. At first, the good Samaritan didn’t think anything of the box. But then they started hearing noises inside it.
The good Samaritan opened the box, and they were shocked when they found a dog and her nine puppies inside it.
The good Samaritan immediately brought the dog and her puppies to a local vet clinic. The family stayed there overnight, and then they were transferred to the British Columbia SPCA.
The BC SPCA wanted to send the family to a foster home, but unfortunately there were none available at the time. And so, they made them as comfortable as possible in their shelter. They gave the family their own room, and they gave them plenty of food and water. They named the mama dog Casey.
“There is no excuse for simply walking away from a pet and leaving them to die,” the BC SPCA’s general manager of communications, Lorie Chortyk, said in a press release. “Abandoning animals is against the law and individuals can be prosecuted for their crime.”
Over the next few weeks, Casey and her puppies adjusted to life in the shelter.
After her ordeal, Casey was naturally a bit timid around the other dogs in the shelter. Still, the shelter staff said she was very sweet. She also did a great job at caring for her puppies—it was clear she loved them more than anything in the world.
Once the puppies are around seven weeks old, the BC SPCA will begin looking for forever homes for all ten dogs.
In the meantime, they’re searching for the person who abandoned all these dogs so cruelly. The shelter also made sure to remind people that the SPCA is always there to help people who are struggling to take care of their pets.
“There is help available for pet guardians who are struggling to care for their animals,” Chortyk said. “They can reach out to a local rescue or the SPCA instead of abandoning them.”
The BC SPCA has helped care for many pups like Casey and her family.
On their Facebook page, they often share photos and videos of the animals in their care. They’ll often share photos of the senior dogs in the shelter—these pups are always the hardest ones to find homes for.
“This handsome senior is hoping to start the week off on the right paw, perhaps by find a forever home? Mosco is an absolute gentleman. He loves his humans but can be choosy when it comes to other dogs (so leashed intros are recommended). An older boy, Mosco enjoys only a couple of short walks a day. Looking to add a furry ball of love to your days?” BC SPCA wrote.
The BC SPCA also cares for smaller animals, like these adorable guinea pigs named the Notorious P.I.G. and her daughter Piggy Smalls. This animal shelter is doing a great job at finding homes for animals of all sizes.
