Just one day before his 26th birthday, Tom Turcich decided to leave his New Jersey home and go on an adventure.

The goal? To travel the world by foot.

According to Tom’s website, www.theworldwalk.com, the passing of Tom’s friend Ann Marie was a wake-up call to his mortality.

It forced him to reconsider what he wanted out of the brief time we all have here.

To get the most out of life, he came up with a plan.

He decided to walk.

By traveling slowly, he knew he would be immersed in unknown places, forced into adventure, and come to better understand the world.

Tom shared his journey every day on Instagram.

Challenges on the journey

But after four months into the journey, Tom felt lonely on his adventure.

So, he stopped in Austin, Texas to adopt a dog.

He named the dog Savannah.

And like any other adventure, the duo experienced challenges.

Savannah got sick during their stay in Chile.

She was diagnosed with anemia and the vet said it takes a while to fully recover.

He had to put their journey on hold and stay in one place for a while, but he had help.

Tom thanked the people who donated to his journey so Savannah was able to get rest.

The other challenge that Tom encountered was in Turkey.

He was trekking the mountains there when he ran into the military.

They thought he was a terrorist.

Fortunately, Tom was able to explain his mission.

The Homecoming

Tom and Savanna spent 7 years visiting 38 countries, just by just walking.

They walked 38,000 miles.

Toms shared that, after 7 years, “When I finally crossed the finish line, I only felt relief. It’s been seven long years. In truth, they felt like twenty.”

“I’ve had wonderful adventures and have grown beyond recognition, but I’ve missed my friends and family. I’ve longed to wake in a bed and not need to expose myself to the elements each day. Those days are finally here. I couldn’t imagine a better ending to The World Walk. Thank you to everyone who’s supported Savannah and I along the way. And thank you to everyone who made it to the homecoming. It’s been an honor sharing my dream with you all.”

And one thing is for sure, our Savannah will surely miss the adventure yet she is happy to be home.
