Dog Left In 107 Degree Heat Can't Trust People. He Drags Rescuer On Ground, But She Won't Let Go
I can't believe someone could abandon a dog in the heat like this. Thank goodness the rescuers were so determined to save him.

Gershwin, a 100-pound dog, was found abandoned in the middle of the desert somewhere in California.

He had been trying to survive at a truck stop. His owner had abandoned him and dropped him off in the middle of nowhere, and now he was all by himself.

A Good Samaritan called Hope For Paws and waited over two and a half hours for them to arrive.

They found the dog curled up behind the bushes, the only place in the area where he had found some shade. When the Hope For Paws people got close to the poor dog, they tried to block him on the path, but the scared pup took off. They couldn’t get near him and realized that although he was enormous, Gershwin was terribly afraid of men.

The people at Hope For Paws knew that if one person would be able to approach the dog, it would be their volunteer Loreta Frankonyte. So, they stayed in the car and observed as Loreta got closer to him.

The temperature that day was 107 degrees.

Gershwin had been living in this unbearable heat for weeks without regular access to food or water. He was hungry and dehydrated. Loreta waited patiently on the sewer-soaked grass so he would get used to her.

“You should try to be on your knees, because he’s now sitting with a back to you. And he doesn’t like that you’re taller than him. So, as you’re going to your knees, try to like, ben down like a rock,” one of the volunteers told Loreta.

Lorena changed her tactics, but as soon as she was able to grab the dog, the 100-pound animal dragged Loreta on the ground as he tried to escape from her. But she wouldn’t let go.

“He’s so strong,” Loreta said. “My hands are shaking!”

According to witnesses, the dog had been there for approximately two months.

The volunteers brought the dog back into their truck; after two long months alone in the desert, it was time for Gershwin to go back to Los Angeles. Gershwin was definitely ready to leave this place, and he hopped straight into the Hope For Paws rescue vehicle. Once they arrived at the rescue center, Gershwin was given a nice warm bath.

Besides the brutal heat, hunger, thirst, loneliness, and fear, Gershwin had unfortunately also suffered a serious infection in his shoulder. The volunteers at Hope For Paws brought Gershwin to a veterinarian, who gave him a proper treatment. The treatment he received was successful, and the dog was finally able to start his recovery.

Today, Gershwin is healed, happy, and full of energy.

He is glad to be around other dogs and is far more approachable than when the volunteers first picked him up.

But unfortunately, this cute dog still needs a loving forever home.

Hope for Paws are hoping that Gershwin will find a loving family and set up his info on the LA Animal Rescue page. They made sure to specify that it would be best for the dog to get into a family where he has another companion to play with or with a family that won’t leave him alone too much during the day.

The LA Animal Rescue is a nonprofit and a small grassroots rescue that functions based on volunteers and donations. The people saving Gershwin, therefore, were not paid to spend their day trying to catch the poor dog, which offers a good perspective on how much the organization cares about the wellbeing and safety of their animals.
