Sometimes, we fail to give the appreciation that our furry friends deserve. We couldn’t count how many times they helped us combat our sadness and help us get through the day. Not only to us, but they also help other animals get back on their feet, just like what this certain dog did for her friend, a horse.
This horse was all skin and bones when he was sent to this shelter.
Carolina Equine Rescue & Assistance (CERA) met Sammy the miniature horse in 2018. At that time, he was emaciated and looked like he couldn’t bear to stand with his four feet for long.
He was scared, especially when he doesn’t know anyone at CERA. However, with the horrible state he’s in, he could only stay at his stable. As much as Sammy is enduring the pain, he is also enduring his sadness.
What Sammy is going through is a lot horrible than we thought.
Sammy was suffering from bilateral locking patella, which is a hindlimb abnormality that is mostly observed in horses. With his condition, he couldn’t walk normally like other horses.
He would stand up with extended hind legs that cause difficulty in walking or even standing. Not only that, it involves constant pain that might become unbearable. Furthermore, if this is not treated immediately, this abnormality might become permanent.
But a mere Golden Retriever changed all that for him.
CERA has kept a 3-year-old Golden Retriever named Molly. She was smart, caring, and most importantly, she could read other’s emotions pretty well. That said, she’s great at socializing with the horses kept at CERA. Furthermore, she supports everyone in any way she can, and that includes comforting the new horses that were sent to them.
She knows when someone needs her help.
When Molly first met poor Sammy, it’s like she already knows that he needs her help the most. He rushed in front of Sammy’s stable and interacted with him. Even though Sammy was in so much pain, the emaciated horse was still able to stand up to greet his kind visitor.
They hit it off pretty quickly, and you can see Sammy giving Molly some licks on the face. It might be her way of saying thanks for accompanying him when he’s lonely.
After a couple of months, Sammy is getting better and better
With the help of Molly’s comforting therapy, it took only a few months for Sammy to feel a bit better. He regained some of his lost weight and has quickly learned how to tread carefully on land with his still locked patella. However, thanks to Molly, Sammy couldn’t be bothered with his hind leg anymore. He would shamelessly run outdoors like a perfectly healthy horse.
His recovery did not stop from there
Until today, Sammy is still fighting like a champ. He has come a long way since the first time he met Molly. He slowly became such a handsome and very active horse. Molly contributed greatly in transforming him into the mini that he is now. Furthermore, with the help of generous people around the world, everyone at CERA continues to give him all the support and encouragement he needs.
