Back in the 70s, pet rocks swept the nation. They were much easier to take care of than an ordinary pet, and supposedly they were just as fun. Having a pet rock doesn’t make much sense to younger generations, but there is someone who can identify with this craze: a dog named Sunny.

Sunny is a beautiful animal who loves his life, but he didn’t always have it so easy. There was a time when he his siblings, along with their mother, lived on the streets of Lexington, South Carolina. The group huddled together as strays, and they faced tremendous difficulties.

All of the pups had flea infestations and other medical conditions that come from living out in the elements. Their lives seemed bleak, until one day they were rescued. The kindness of a stranger changed everything.

Ariana Smoak, a local resident, spotted Sunny and his family and took them in. She covered their medical costs and helped them to regain their health. Now that the dogs were clean and content, they were ready for their happily ever after. Oddly enough, this didn’t go quite the way Ariana had planned.

She probably expected Sunny to become her best friend, since she had given him a home and turned his entire life around. Instead, she was replaced by the brick that she had used to keep her rug from folding over. That’s right, this dog chose a brick to be his best friend.

Sunny and his bestie do everything together, from planning adventures to just laying around. This dog hasn’t seemed to notice that his friend doesn’t do much. The brick is loyal, and maybe that’s what matters most.

While Ariana is extremely happy that Sunny likes his new life, she wishes she had a more prominent place in his heart. She squeezes in quality time with her pup whenever the brick is not around. After all, no one likes being the third wheel.

As Sunny has grown older, his companionship with the brick has grown more serious. The two are practically inseparable. What is a girl to do, other than admit that she has been bested by a brick?

Ariana took to Twitter to voice her concerns about her dog’s bizarre best friend. She got some of the best reactions EVER. One follower insists that a brick is an excellent friend for a pet to have. It is low maintenance, inexpensive, and unselfish. What an easy-going friendship!

Other Twitter users have shared their own strange experiences. Apparently having an inanimate object for a friend is quite common in the dog world.

“Our other dog steals all the good toys, so Pluto’s learned to love his brick,” shared user Kasey Ford.

These weren’t the only dogs with weird companions. Alexis Bertram posted, “My rot has had this rock for 4 years now.” That is some serious dedication.

Cutest of all is Chloe May‘s response. She shared a photo of her pup, entitled “my pumpkin and his bowling pin.”

When it comes to making friends, pets aren’t afraid to get creative. Unlike humans, dogs don’t need their best friends to love doing every activity together. Sometimes they just need someone they can relax with.

When you just want to chill out, there is no one easier to hang out with than a brick. Ariana just may have to accept her place as Sunny’s second closest friend.
