You can find plenty of things at the mall! Clothes, computers, all kinds of food, phone cases, jewelry… You name it. The world is your oyster when you step inside of a mall. Anything is possible.
That being said, one thing you’d never really expect to see at a mall is a stray dog. Sure, maybe there are stores where you can adopt dogs but… A single stray dog? How would he even manage to sneak inside on his own?!
Never say never.
Jan Mart Calimpong was strolling at a mall near his home in the Phillippines when he noticed something awfully strange.
A day meant for shopping turned into something very different and unexpected.
Out of nowhere, the man came across a stray dog lying in the middle of the walkway. The dog looked comfortable as he was making himself right at home and looking for people who would show him some love.
He talked to The Dodo all about the strange experience.
“It was unusual,” he said.
Makes sense — how often do you come across a stray dog at the mall, after all?
A mall security guard was soon notified about the pup. But when the guard came over to escort him out, he wasn’t as harsh as people were expecting him to be.
To everyone’s surprise, the guard actually gave the dog a quick little scratch and some love before showing him the way to the exit. Clearly, there were no hard feelings there.
“He handled him like a pet,” Calimpong said. “He was even wagging his tail.”
Calimpong shared the video to Facebook, which went viral.
He wrote: “Nice job Vista Mall employees. Though this dog entered the mall premises unnoticed, I was glad he was not treated harshly when sent back outside, instead the guard escorted him like he was their pet.”
The man wasn’t expecting it but the video ended up getting hundreds of thousands of likes, comments, and shares. People all around the world were thrilled to see a stray dog being treated so kindly.
But here’s the best part.
The dog wasn’t even evicted from the mall.
When the dog was brought to management’s attention, they pulled the opposite move and offered him a job. Now he was officially a part of the mall’s security team.
“We are continuously building a culture of inclusiveness where humans and animals, like Dogdog, come together and help each other,” mall officials wrote on their own Facebook page.
“Most mall-goers now consider Dogdog a living landmark. He’s a must-see for people in the area. As a pet lover, particularly for dogs, I’m really glad to see that,” Calimpong added.
After the viral success of the initial video, Calimpong took to Facebook to share his thoughts along with another really sweet message.
“Who would expect that video would become so viral? Anyway, I received news that dog-dog just became an instant celebrity so I wanna thank those people who shared and sent photos of them feeding him and his friends,” he wrote.
“Let’s continue to be thoughtful not just to people around us. But also to our furry friends everywhere we go,” he added.
This is a very important message! We must be kind to everyone, even if that someone is not a human. We are all friends on this beautiful planet of ours.
