A crying baby usually isn’t crying for no reason (unless they are a toddler who wants attention). If a baby cries, they need food, to be changed, or just want snuggles – sometimes, it’s all of the above! Moms always have tricks to quiet their baby down when needed, and each kid has different things that help it calm down.
For one dog, a crying baby needed attention, and he came to the rescue!
Brutus is a Bullmastiff that lives in Northern California. Like many dogs, Brutus has lots of toys, nearly all of them completely shredded. Nearly all. There is one toy that Brutus has never shredded, however, and he is very careful to keep it whole.
The plush yellow ball isn’t all that fancy, and he loves to walk around the house, holding it gently in his mouth.
“It’s the only toy that he won’t tear apart in five minutes,” Bonnie Michalek, Brutus’ human, told The Dodo.
You can see Brutus’ true heart in his treatment of his favorite toy! He is a huge dog (a Bullmastiff), but you can’t find a gentler or more loving dog than him. He loves to shred toys, but he knows how to be gentle when needed!
Bonnie Michalek and her husband got Brutus in 2016 after getting a house big enough to have a big dog!
They knew they wanted a big dog, and once they had space for one, along came Brutus! Bonnie always refers to him as her first baby. It’s clear that Bonnie has a loving home!
As time went on, however, Brutus became a big brother!
The “first” in Bonnie calling him her “first baby” is key – she ended up having a human baby! Little Kayden came into the world, and Brutus officially had the honor of becoming something that all dogs aspire to – a doggy big brother.
Having a baby in the house was new for everyone, including Brutus!
They knew that Brutus would take the whole event in stride, however.
“He’s always loved kids,” Michalek said. “Every time he’s heard kids outside laughing he gets excited.”
He even knew that Bonnie was pregnant before they did!
“Brutus knew I was pregnant before I did — he definitely sensed it before I knew,” Michalek said. “On the nights my husband was working Brutus refused to be in his crate.”
A hilarious event happened not long ago, and Brutus was at the center of it.
Since the first time Kayden came home, Brutus was his friend and protector. Once, while everyone was watching, Kayden started crying. After he didn’t stop, Brutus walked over to his toy pile, selected a single plush toy, and brought it over.
It was the ball!
Brutus knew that if he was sad, his favorite toy was always there to help. Why wouldn’t it work with Kayden?
“He grabs his favorite toy to bring it to Kayden to console him!” Michalek said.
Now, if Kayden wants to see his big brother, all he needs to do is shed a few tears. Soon after, a lumbering teddy bear is sure to show up with a plush ball and kisses galore!
