One of the many great things about dogs is that they’re always happy to see you when you get home. It’s almost as if they’ve been relentless and actively waiting for your triumphant return.
If a new viral video is to be believed, that might not be far from the truth.
In fact, it’s possible they’re doing absolutely nothing but missing you the whole darn time!
And maybe some howling.
But don’t feel guilty – they get over it every single day and we all have to live our lives.
A dog owner turned the camera on their pups to see exactly what happens when the door closes.
But we don’t know who is going to be feeling more separation anxiety after seeing this – them or the dogs!
The dogs’ protest against being left home alone continues as we move from light howling to a duet of misery – think the saddest, most depressing country song you’ve ever heard and you might be close.
Those adorable dogs really do have the whole harmonizing thing down though.
We’re not sure how close the neighbors are – but let’s just hope they’re not too close.
Once the dogs finish their duet, they realize it has not been the magical siren song they had hoped it would be. So they move on to moping a little.
Well, one of them does. The other appears to sense a camera where there shouldn’t be one because he or she keeps looking over at it.
But eventually, they both enter the “moping with sad eyes out the door” phase.
If your dog has a bit of separation anxiety (or just a deeply inactive imagination about what to do when you’re gone), there’s at least some chance they’re just sitting there, waiting for you.
Despite the fact that these two have each other to play with, it looks like they plan to camp out at the door for the foreseeable future.
Frankly, we’d feel a bit sad to know our dogs were so…well, doggone bored while we were gone.
Shouldn’t it be party time when the parents are away?!
Since this kind of behavior could be indicative of separation anxiety, it’s always good to talk to a vet about ways for your home to be more stimulating for your pet when they’re alone.
Even something as simple as playing some music or leaving the TV on can add some comfort.
Otherwise, it’s a good idea to train them to be less clingy in general.
Start here for some good resources; every dog is different.
Normally, another animal can be good company, but as we’ve seen above, the general ennui can be contagious! (Well, that or it’s the best view in the house since they can see through the doors.)
But there are some other reasons dogs can be attracted to waiting at the door as well – for example, Nature was calling.
That can mean at least three things:
1) it’s potty time (we sure hope these pups were pottied before their owners left!);
2) their hormones are calling them to mate (that’s particularly the case for intact animals);
3) it’s WAY more fun out there and they know it.
The first item has an obvious solution and the second can be dealt with in a fairly straightforward way (spay and neuter your pets!).
But if your dog is truly just bored throughout the day, you might want to consider a dog walker to break up their days, especially if you’re gone for extended periods.
Of course, there’s a chance the dogs in our video gave up after a little while and went about their day.
If they have enough toys and a mate to play with and nothing else is truly wrong, they might be perfectly happy to spend a good amount of time simply waiting for their human(s) to come home.
After all, they probably worship you, oh mighty bringer of food and treats and fun!
