Dogs are known to be loyal friends and caring companions.

Many dogs have been hailed as heroes for saving their owners’ lives, and a lot of people believe we don’t deserve their unconditional love.

They’re too good for us, really.

From a pup calling 911 until his owner was rescued and Layka, a dog who lost her leg to save a soldier in Afghanistan.

The dogs above are just a few examples of loyal puppies who went above and beyond to help their humans. But similar incidents happen every day.

One rescue happened days before Christmas.

On December 14, the Dowling family was upset.

Jeff and Kelly had been trying to comfort their 9-month-old baby, who was sick with a cold while trying to keep the family dog away from the nursery.

8-year-old Henry, a Boston Terrier, is the baby’s best friend, so he was worried about her being ill.

He wanted to be by her side, but his owners wanted to ensure the baby would have some time to sleep undisturbed.

Henry didn’t seem willing to cooperate.

He kept headbutting the nursery door and constantly trying to enter the baby’s room.

At first, mom Kelly was annoyed. She wrote on Twitter:

“Last night the dog kept breaking into the nursery and waking the baby. She’s been sick, and I was getting so fed up with him.”

However, it seems that Henry had a good reason for doing it.

He must have sensed something was wrong with the baby and wanted to warn Kelly and Jeff.

At some point, the parents did go to check on the sleeping baby, and that’s when they realized what the dog had been trying to tell them the whole time.

The baby hadn’t been able to clear her airways and practically couldn’t breathe.

“She wasn’t clearing her airway,” Kelly Dowling told ABC News. “She started to turn blue and go rigid and she just really couldn’t get air, couldn’t get any oxygen.”

The couple rushed their daughter to the Connecticut Children’s Hospital, hoping that the doctors there would be able to save their baby.

Indeed, doctors could clear her airways, and the family was sent back home later that night.

The Dowlings are forever grateful to their furry baby for saving their baby girl, and, as Kelly admitted, they don’t know “what would have happened if he hadn’t woken her.”

Henry, after the incident, received lots of extra hugs and belly rubs, while he also enjoyed special treatment for being such a good boy.

“We’re definitely spoiling the dog a little bit more,” Jeff Dowling said. “He was allowed to sleep in bed with me last night, and he’s got a steak in his future.”
