Do you believe in fate?
For Lucy Humphrey, it might be a difficult concept to disprove.
Humphrey was faced with a dire situation when her body started to give in to a sickness she had endured for over 15 years.
The 44-year-old from Caerphilly was battling lupus. The disease caused inflammation in her heart, liver, and kidneys.
Her doctors said she only had five years to live without a proper donor.
All of that was about to change when they went to the beach.
Humphreys and her partner, Cenydd Owen, had recently bought a campervan to take their two Dobermans out.
Jake and Indie, their dogs, loved spending time outdoors.
However, even that kind of vacation proved too much for her.
So instead of driving far, the couple barbecued at a nearby beach.
It was then that they had a chance encounter with a stranger.
One of their dogs, Indie, kept on engaging a woman crocheting.
The woman was about 100 yards away from Humphrey and Owen’s setup.
Thinking her dog was disturbing the woman, she kept calling Indie back.
The stranger, Katie James, eased Humphrey’s worries when she said she didn’t mind.
To make up for Indie’s constant bugging, Humphrey invited James over.
James brought some drinks with her, and when she offered Humphreys some, Owen refused politely and said she was undergoing dialysis.
James pried a bit more and asked Owen what the dialysis was for. He said her partner was waiting for a kidney transplant. At that moment, they knew fate has smiled on them.
James explained that she just registered her kidney for donation.
When Owen asked who James was donating to, James said it was for “anyone who wants it.” The two women then swapped numbers.
The next day, they contacted their donor coordinator. The women passed all the necessary tests and found out that James was a perfect match for Humphrey!
It was even after Humphrey’s doctor said that she only had a chance of 1 in 22 million to find a perfect donor.
The transplant took place on October 2022 in Cardiff.
“I feel really proud of myself, I get embarrassed sometimes though as every time I’m out with my nan she will tell a stranger ‘Oh my granddaughter donated a kidney’.” James said to BBC.
Because of Indie and a chance encounter, Humphrey’s life changed completely. Humphrey said that Indie’s constant bugging of James made them realize that maybe it was Indie’s way of choosing James for Humphrey.
More than the kindness, everyone involved wants to show that there’s always hope.
The couple explained that their day by the beach was brought about by chance much like their encounter with James. No one knew that the trip was actually the one that will change their lives forever.
“We want to show that there is always hope for people. Never give in, because you never know, we weren’t even going to go to the beach that day. There’s a lot of good people out there.” Owen said to BBC.
