It is easy to pass judgment on things we don’t fully understand.
It is only right to speak against pet abandonment.
These animals, more than a family to some, are only there to give us unconditional love, so it’s truly heartbreaking when we hear news of dogs, among other animals, being left in the streets.
But sometimes, there are much more painful stories behind these actions.
Some may be downright cruel, but others were just forced to make one of the worst decisions they’ll ever make.
Lilo was still wearing a leash when she was turned in to McKamey Animal Center.
By the looks of it, the dog is well.
She isn’t dirty or emaciated, there are no wounds, and she still has her leash on.
She wasn’t wandering for too long, but signs also pointed out that she was abandoned.
It was only confirmed, however, by the piece of paper they found on her leash.
The staff of McKamey Animal Center opened the note.
“My name is Lilo,” the letter started.
“My mom can’t keep me and is homeless with 2 kids. She tried her best but can’t get help.”
The letter implored whoever found Lilo not to abuse her and that she has always been loved.
Unfortunately, circumstances made it difficult for her mom to commit to her welfare.
But instead of chastising the owner, the staff showed compassion.
They posted the note and explained to Lilo’s owner that they understood where she was coming from.
They were also heartbroken because a loving owner was forced to make a decision she never would’ve imagined she‘d make.
“We know how hard it must be to give up an animal you so clearly loved because you can’t provide the care she needs. We understand,” the shelter wrote in their post.
Then, they assured her owner that Lilo was safe and would be given the best care.
They also said that they’d keep her name and would provide a good home for her.
However, they also asked the owner for one thing.
They asked her to reclaim Lilo.
They said they would give her the help she needed as long as she continued caring for the dog.
“Lilo definitely misses you, and we would like nothing more than to see her return to the family she loves,” the post said.
They also told her that they would not judge her in any way – that they just wanted to help her in the best way they could.
The shelter recognized they were facing a bigger problem.
When the owner finally came forward, they worked with her so they could have shelter and resources to stay together.
The post also garnered much support from people through resources the family could use, like clothes, blankets, food, and toiletries.
The McKamey Animal Center maintained that animal abandonment is illegal.
However, they also emphasized understanding the situation first before passing judgment.
“We are amazed at the outpouring of support. It truly takes a community, and you all have certainly shown us how powerful ours is – thank you so much,” their post ended.
