Elmo the pit bull had a rough start to life. Elmo and another dog spent all their time out in a yard, never getting to go inside. A concerned neighbor called Animal Control, who came to save the dogs. Both dogs were very neglected, and they desperately needed a new home.
Elmo and the other dog went to local rescue group KC Rescue Project. After everything he had been through, Elmo was very depressed.
The dog Elmo was with quickly got adopted, but rescuers couldn’t find the right forever home for Elmo. The longer Elmo stayed in the shelter, the more miserable he got.
The rescuers wanted to bring light into Elmo’s life. And so, they decided to take him along on their annual Furlough Day.
During Furlough, KC Rescue Project brings their dogs out into Downtown Kansas City. The pups get to meet potential adopters, and they also get to simply enjoy being outside and playing in the grass.
As soon as Elmo got outside, he turned into a whole new dog. As he walked through downtown, the biggest, most joyful smile spread across his face.
Linda Smith, one of the rescuers at KC Rescue Project, took Elmo all around Kansas City. The two visited some of Kansas City’s most famous historical sites, and they spent some time with a local hairdresser. They also visited a cool coffee shop, which Elmo clearly loved.
Smith and Elmo also spent lots of time playing in the park. Smith was so happy to see Elmo smiling again. She couldn’t stop hugging him!
“This is what Furlough is all about. Seeing great dogs like Elmo out enjoying our city,” KC Rescue Project wrote on Facebook. “Elmo had a blast meeting new people at Penguin Park.”
After Furlough, Elmo transformed into a whole new dog. From that moment on, he was the happiest pup at KC Rescue Project.
KC Rescue Project shared photos of Elmo enjoying his day out on his Facebook page. The photos were shared far and wide—everyone loved seeing Elmo’s transformation. It was also amazing to see Elmo learn to trust humans again. Even though he had been through so much, the pup still had a lot of love to give.
One couple completely fell in love with Elmo’s photos. They drove five hours to adopt the pup. Just like that, Elmo had a wonderful new forever home!
Elmo had a hard time adjusting when he was first rescued from his neglected home. But thankfully, shelter staff were able to find a way to get Elmo out of his shell. Now, Elmo has a wonderful place to call home!
