Nala the pitbull had been wandering the streets of Christchurch in New Zealand for who knows how long when she was finally saved.

After she was taken to the Christchurch Bull Breed Rescue, it quickly became apparent that in addition to being starving and scared, she was also totally depressed.

Nothing seemed to cheer the poor little girl up until the day a magnificently cute 7-year-old boy walked into her life, and that’s when she finally lit up and showed off her true, happy puppy self!

It’s not easy being a pitbull. Everyone pretty hates you because they think you were born to be bad!

But, Nala was anything but bad doggy. A life of homelessness had certainly made her shy and withdrawn, but she was still a total sweetie at heart.

The owner of the rescue, Abbey van der Plas, tried forever to gain Nala’s trust, but a “ruff” life on the streets taught her to be weary of strangers. Abbey wrote of this new arrival on her Facebook page:

“NEW ARRIVAL – This girl arrived with us a few weeks ago. She had been wandering the streets for some time and was extremely shut down and terrified. I spent her entire first & second day sitting on the floor trying to gain her trust.”

No matter how many promises of snacks and toys Abbey whispered into her ears, Nala wasn’t budging from her spot on the floor. As far as the pup was concerned, her square little bed was her safe place.

“I took hours and hours of footage trying to catch ‘the moment’ that she decided to trust me. She wasn’t having a bar of me, just sat at the back of the run trembling and growling. Then I bought in my secret weapon and the magic happened right before my eyes!!”

The secret weapon of course was her adorable 7-year-old son, Zach!

Video footage of the encounter shows that even before Zach plopped down on the floor, Nala’s ears had already perked up. She lifted her head as soon as he walked into the room, and when he finally sat down she jumped up out of bed to greet the little blonde cutie!

It was obvious from her happy demeanor that her old, depressed life was over. The pooch even felt comfortable enough around Zach to do that adorable “downward dog” stretch that yoga stole from the canine community.

Now that Abbey had finally gained Nala’s trust by bringing out her son, the dog wagged her tail and promptly gave her a wet kiss on the nose as if to say “thank you.”

Abbey told Inside Edition that the pup’s separation issue has only gotten better over time. Her son Zach is even teaching the dog commands like “sit” and “down” which will come in handy when she’s finally adopted into her fur-ever home.

Not surprisingly, Nala actually prefers to spend all her time around kids rather than adults. She loves to play with Abbey’s other son while she’s being fostered at their home.

As a mom, Abbey’s gut instinct tells her that this sweet girl probably lived with children before she somehow ended up on the streets. It’s no wonder Nala totally transformed the moment Zach walked into her life!
