Getting gifts from the people we love is always nice, especially when we don’t expect it.
Just knowing they thought of us is usually enough to put us in a good mood for the rest of the day! For families where someone is gone for extended periods of time, however, the best gift they can give is their presence!
For one dog, a gift from his dad overseas resulted in the cutest display of affection we’ve ever seen!
Brindle the dog didn’t have a home or family for a lot of his life. He was originally a shelter dog and, as a result, lived a pretty lonely life. Most shelter dogs ended up there from abandonment or the streets when all they want it a family to love them.
Thankfully, JD and Rachel walked into his life.
JD and his wife, Rachel, were looking for a dog to add to their family! Right when they brought Brindle into their home, they knew it was a fit. Brindle was as loving as could be. Between the two, Rachel even admits that he liked JD more!
When JD was deployed, it was hard on Rachel and Brindle.
At the beginning of 2018, JD went overseas for nearly a year as a part of the Army Reserves. Being away from home was hard on everyone, Brindle included – he missed his dad!
“He’s so sad without him here, He has days where he just sits at the front window, crying.” – Rachel
Knowing that his dog was sad without him there, JD thought he would do something to help remind him he was still out there and was coming home.
This is where the gifts come in! Dogs don’t really understand gifts or letters like we do, but they do understand one thing – scent! If JD couldn’t physically be there with his buddy, he might as well send him the gift of his presence, even if he wasn’t there in person.
JD went through his clothes and decided he was going to send one of his unwashed shirts!
If they were going to get his scent all the way across the world, they would have to use a shirt that has some of his essence on it (gross, right?) He put it in the mail and sent it on its way across the ocean!
When Rachel received the package, she called Brindle over to get his reaction.
As you can imagine, the ensuing happiness was as cute as can possibly be! The little depressed dog turned into a happy puppy, rolling over and remembering his dad and all their great memories!
“He immediately knew that it was JD’s shirt. There was no doubt about it,” Rachel said. “I was crying so hard while recording his reaction.”
He even started carrying around the shirt with him so he wouldn’t lose his dad’s scent!
Now, if that isn’t adorable, we don’t know what is! Even better is the fact that they didn’t have to wait too much longer to see JD either! He came home a month later, and Brindle hasn’t left him by himself since!
