When you live in a rural area, chances are you’ll have wild animals visiting you.
From opossums to bears, bobcats to deer – they will drop by your doorstep and surprise you. Most likely, they are merely passing by as they move around from one habitat to another. It’d be nice to say ‘hi,’ especially if you barely encounter these animals.
Take note, though, that you have to approach with caution.
Some animals are not used to human interaction. Thus, if you want a glimpse of these gentle beasts, you need to know which one you can approach. Once you gain their trust, they might be a regular visitor to your yard.
Just like this man in Austin, Texas, who befriended some deer that passed by his home.
Lynn Smith, aka Deer Whisperer, said that his friendship with 50 deer in his area started during the pandemic. He told WGN9 that he and his wife had canceled their gym subscription and started working out at home. They were doing sprints in their driveway, and that’s when the deer began to get comfortable.
According to Lynn, it took some over a year to feed off his hands.
But through time, these gentle animals learned to trust Lynn and his wife to form this special bond. He posted multiple videos on TikTok, and he gained 2.4 million followers with over 36 million likes. Who wouldn’t be amazed by his content, right?
One of his viral videos is when he called for ‘Buddy.’
He was at the door, drinking from a mug with a bowl of treats ready. He opened his door and called out the deer’s name. The deer named Buddy appeared right behind him in just a few seconds.
Buddy went near the door, knowing that a snack was waiting for him.
He was happily munching his snack, while Lynn was simply amazed at how easy it was to call him and come by the door. People in the comments section found this mind-blowing and enjoyed their bond as well.
But one thing that was also amazing about this is how he knew who is which.
If you take a closer look, most of the deer looked alike. Yet Lynn knows how to tell them apart. He said in the same interview:
“When you’re up close with the deer, their faces look different. [Some of them] have scars, and their horns are different. And when you’re up close, you can tell them apart pretty easily.”
That is still a fantastic feat, don’t you think?
In most cases, animal and wildlife control would step in during these situations.
However, Lynn assured that none of them approached and warned him since this doesn’t disrupt the entire ecosystem in the forest nearby. He also assured that they don’t have to worry about coyotes or bobcats running after the deer because their population is far less than that of the deer.
His wife and kids (and neighbors) are as fond of the deer as he is.
