Gabi first started feeding the crows in her Seattle neighborhood in 2011, when she was four years old. At first, she fed them accidentally—she’d dropped a piece of bread or a chicken nugget while she was getting out of the car, and a crow would come and eat it.

When Gabi realized that the birds were eating the food she dropped, she started dropping more food on purpose. Soon, Gabi was giving most of her school lunches to the crows!

Gabi’s mom, Lisa, didn’t mind her daughter feeding the crows. She liked that Gabi had such an affinity for animals. In 2013, Lisa and Gabi set up a bird feeder in their backyard filled with the crows’ favorite foods, including peanuts and bird seed. The crows would flock to their backyard and eat their fill.

Soon after this, the crows started bringing Gabi presents to thank her for the food.

One of the first presents Gabi received was a little bead with the word ‘best’ on it. Gabi liked to imagine that the crow was wearing the matching bead that said ‘friend!’

Soon after this, Gabi started receiving more and more gifts. The crows usually brought Gabi small, shiny objects, including beads, earrings screws, and little pieces of metal. Once in a while, they’d bring something ‘ickier,’ like a rotted crab claw. Lisa wisely threw this gift out.

Gabi keeps all her presents in jars and bags in her room. She loves her gifts more than anything in the world!

“She absolutely loved seeing the crow eat,” Lisa Mann said. “She gave the crows nicknames and could identify them just by looking at them. … As (she) fed the birds, crows began leaving ‘gifts’ in our front courtyard, including worn pieces of glass and lost earrings.”

Gabi’s favorite gift is a beautiful little heart bead.

“It’s showing me how much they love me,” Gabi explained to the BBC.

In 2015, photos of Gabi and her crows went viral. Everyone on the internet was amazed by the way the crows communicated with Gabi!

Unfortunately, some people in Lisa and Gabi’s neighborhood didn’t like the crows as much as Gabi. Soon after Gabi’s story went viral, some of her neighbors sued Lisa, saying that the birds were a nuisance. In the end, the lawsuit was dismissed, and Gabi was able to continue feeding her beloved crows.
