When people speak about getting an animal to protect their homes, the first idea is usually a big scary guard dog, right?

Well, in some cases, it’s the feline species that prove the most territorial.

That was proven true in one Los Angeles home when the family cat scared off an unwanted intruder.

In the early hours of the morning, a family was awakened by a ruckus coming from their living room.

They had no idea what was happening, but it went quiet again shortly after the disturbance started.

When the homeowners went to look, they saw nothing other than their very angry cat.

They checked out their surveillance cameras the next morning and were shocked to see that a wild coyote had made its way into their home.

The animal had crawled in through a doggy door and was exploring the home when it stumbled across the cat.

Though the size difference was immense, the coyote was clearly terrified of the ferocious feline.

It was seen backing away with its tail between its legs as the cat raced back and forth, hissing and mewling, across the dining room chairs.

The coyote didn’t stick around long enough to feel the power of the angry kitty’s swipe, but it certainly knew what it would have been in for if it had stuck around.

Luckily for this family, their furry friend was also their savior.

This is not the first time there have been coyote encounters in the same neighborhood though, they are a fairly common occurrence.

According to Citizens for Los Angeles Wildlife (CLAW), coyotes are a vital part of the ecosystem in that area and are beneficial in many ways.

They are, however, still wild animals and should be avoided whenever possible.

The people living in the neighborhood believe that the animals have been getting bolder in the last few years, and have become much more aggressive.

This is due, in part, to the fact that some residents in the neighborhood have been leaving food out for the animals.

Ron Lauer, a long-time resident, has many hours of footage on his home security system of the coyotes prowling the neighborhood.

“They can hop a 6-foot fence…” the man says, “…If they want to get in, they’ll find a way.”

The man even has footage of packs of the animals, strolling through the area, baying at the top of their lungs all through the night.

Residents are advised to keep well clear of the animals and to do everything possible to discourage them.

People are asked to ensure that their garbage bins are properly stored and contained and not to leave any food outside that can attract them.

This includes pet food as the coyotes eat that too.

It is also advised to always keep your pet within eyesight and on a leash, and don’t let young children play unsupervised either.
