Bear and Teddy often wandered around TravUK’s neighborhood while he was at work. One day about a week after Bear’s death, Teddy went for a walk like usual.

When Teddy came home, TravUK was shocked to see that he had a note attached to his collar.

TravUK pulled the note off Teddy’s collar and read it. It said:

“Dear Owner; I’m your neighbour, living in 4. I’m also your cats’ close friends as they (2 cats) are used to coming to my room everyday. But one of them, a bigger one has disappeared for two weeks. Is he ok? I’m so worried about him. He is so lovely cat and always touched my heart. Wish he is fine. – Y.T. 2/March/2017.”

TravUK and his girlfriend were amazed to hear about Bear and Teddy’s secret life, and they wanted to learn more about this person who loved their cats as much as them. The couple wrote a note back and said that Bear had passed away. They also included their email address to make it easier for them to communicate.

The couple’s neighbor quickly sent them an email with her condolences. She told them that she was a Taiwanese exchange student, and Bear and Teddy often sat with her while she was doing schoolwork. TravUK was particularly touched to learn that Bear would sit and listen while she practiced her school presentations. The cats were the calm, patient audience she needed to feel more confident in her public speaking.

The woman also sent over a few photos she had taken of Bear and Teddy, which TravUK shared on Reddit. He loved having new photos of Bear to cherish.

TravUK told the exchange student that they had buried Bear in their garden, and she came over to save goodbye and bring flowers. TravUK was amazed to hear how much light Bear had brought to this stranger’s life.

“Makes you proud that he could brighten up more than just my households lives,” TravUK wrote on Reddit.

TravUK does still have moments when the loss of his beloved cat hits him hard. He wrote on Reddit:

“Bear always used to make a ‘wa-waow’ sound whenever he saw me. It was definitely his greeting. Not hearing that now is very saddening.

Little things too, such as when Teddy is indoors, you can now close the other doors in the house knowing there’s no other cats that could come through, or not hearing the catflap go as Bear comes in late after Teddy for food.”

Even though TravUK is still mourning, hearing how much his cat helped a stranger provided him with some closure. Bear’s touching story shows how much impact an animal can have on the lives around him. Bear lived a good, full life, and he made sure to spread lots of love during his years on Earth.
