May 1st and the sun hasn’t peaked yet, a couple from southeastern Tennessee named Julie Thornton Johnson and Jimmy Johnson woke up to a furry surprise.
The wife, Julie, got up at around 4:00 early in the morning when she noticed a dog was with them on their bed. She just let it slide because they have three hounds at home named Jupiter, Hollis, and Zeppelin who also love sleeping on their bed.
She went back to bed and continued sleeping.
But as soon as the sun’s light began shining through their window, the image of that “dog” became much clearer.
At around 6:30 A.M., the husband, Jimmy woke up and was surprised by what he saw on their bed.
“Julie, whose dog is this?” he asked in a low but serious tone.
The curious wife rolled over and looked at Jimmy. Soon, they both realized that what they thought was their dog snuggled with them on their bed wasn’t actually theirs.
At first, Julie got scared that someone might’ve broken into their home. A burglar, perhaps? Nobody knew.
It then became clear to her that the dog was only there to doze off.
She took pictures of the dog and shared the bizarre but fun encounter on Facebook.
In her post, she wrote, “This is the weirdest post I have ever had to make. 😂 Is this your dog? 🐕 Please share.”
The dog had no collar or anything that would tell them its identity or who its owners were. Gladly, the dog’s owner saw Julie’s post on social media. The woman sent her a personal message claiming that the dog was theirs.
With her only intention to make sure she was giving the dog to the rightful owners, Julie politely asked for proof that they were the real owners of the dog. The woman then sent Christmas and Easter pictures and plenty of photos of the dog which was later on named by the owner as Nala.
Felecia Johnson and Cris Hawkins are Nala’s owners, according to them, the dog slipped out of her collar the night before when their dad took her out for a walk.
Nala ran into the woods and disappeared from there.
They tried to look for her but the adventurous dog decided to play ‘hard to get.’ Nala came back home later that night but didn’t want to go inside their home.
Felecia and Cris decided to wait, they thought the dog would eventually come inside but they were terribly wrong. Nala went out again to continue her journey. Can’t blame her, she’s a curious pup, she’s expected to be always out there playing.
How Nala got inside the Johnsons’ house was still a mystery. Although Julie had a hunch that the dog might’ve pushed one of their doors open when the pup was trying to look for a place to stay during the thunderstorm.
Earlier that day, Jimmy took their dogs outside before going to bed and he might’ve left one of their doors slightly open.
Felecia came over to the Johnsons to pick up Nala, however, it took her some convincing.
“She’s almost as big as I am, but since she’s been a puppy, I carry her on my hip like she’s a little kid,” she said. “And now that she’s grown, she still expects me to do that. It’s a lot harder now, but I had to carry this big dog out of (Julie and Jimmy’s) house. If it wasn’t crazy enough. … I had to carry her out like a child.”
Days after that surprise sleepover, the families all decided to go out on a furry date together with their dogs who enjoyed gobbling in some vanilla ice cream and other tasty treats.
“The four of us could not even believe the attention this story has gotten and how one dog has brought the four of us together,” Julie said. “The eight of us, actually — four humans and four dogs — into, I hope, a friendship.”
We are certain that Nala’s unexpected sleepover is going to be a key to a fruitful friendship between these two families, and of course, their dogs.
