During a 10-week road trip, Emily Trost and her boyfriend stopped at a gas station in Montana. When they came back outside, they noticed an adorable puppy sitting by their car.

After stepping into the convenience store of the gas station, Emily came back out to find the sweetest, cutest puppy sitting next to their car — as if she was waiting specifically for them.

“Our initial thought was that she was the pet of someone else using the gas station,” Emily told The Dodo. “My boyfriend and I went around to others at the gas station asking if she was theirs. We also waited with her to see if somebody came out of the gas station store to claim her. Nobody did, and as we were waiting, we realized how dirty she was with thorns, twigs and pricklies all caught in her long hair and our hearts broke for her.”

The couple stayed at the gas station, hoping to find her owner. A woman came by and said she feeds the strays in the area — she begged them to take the puppy.

Emily looked at her boyfriend, and they both agreed that they should at least take the adorable pup to a shelter. However, after spending just a few moments with the precious pooch, they knew that she was theirs from there on out.

“Within minutes of driving away with her in the car, we knew she was coming home with us,” Emily said.

Immediately falling in love with the beautiful dog, Emily decided to name the dog ‘Montana,’ after the state they found her in.

Montana was most likely very used to people feeding her, but when Emily and her boyfriend invited her to hop in the car, she had no idea she’d be walking into her new forever family. Her entire life was about to change.

“The morning after we got her was the best,” Emily said. “She woke up in our tent and started crawling up to our heads, whimpering and giving us kisses. We could tell she was truly surprised that we were still there with her and that no human had probably ever stayed with her for that long.”

During the first few days, the 7-month-old puppy did a lot of sleeping. She had never experienced a warm bed with snuggles before.

It wasn’t long before Montana was settled in with her new life. Her personality began to shine. Montana proved to be a very happy, goofy, and playful pup. And as it turns out? She absolutely loves road trips! Montana gladly accompanied Emily and her boyfriend for the rest of their journey.

“She loved the rest of the trip, always excited to hike and swim with us,” Emily said. “She was great in the car and would just lay down and sleep. She even loved sleeping in the tent every night and learned very quickly that wherever our tent was set up was home.”

When the road trip drew to an end, Emily took Montana home to introduce her to her new doggy siblings.

Montana loves her new home with her new family. She has plenty of toys to play with and receives tons of snuggles from the entire family. Emily says that she can be a bit stubborn, but other than that, she’s a very happy girl.

Montana chose the perfect car to sit next to that fateful day, and she couldn’t be more in love with her new life.
