Larry the cat was taking his daily outside adventure when it had started to rain. Larry did not want to get wet and promptly made his way to the door of his home. This would not be out of the ordinary for a cat in London, but Larry is different than most cats. Larry’s home is at 10 Downing Street, the British Prime Minister’s home and the official headquarters to the United Kingdom’s government.

Larry the cat’s proper title is Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office.

Having a proper position within 10 Downing Street means that Larry cannot be left outside, like any other cat, to get cold and wet in the rain. 10 Downing Street does not have a pet door to let Larry come and go as he pleases. So, he has to wait until he is let in. The police officer guarding 10 Downing Street took pity on the rambunctious cat and knocked on the door to let him in, which he quickly did the first moment the door opened.

It was not the first time Larry was let inside by a police officer, the Chief Mouser is used to the prompt help.

Larry was rescued from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, under Prime Minister David Cameron, because he was known for his skills in hunting mice. Yet, when he first arrived it took him awhile to capture his first mouse. His official bio on the United Kingdom’s government website states,

“Larry spends his days greeting guests to the house, inspecting security defences and testing antique furniture for napping quality. His day-to-day responsibilities also include contemplating a solution to the mouse occupancy of the house. Larry says this is still ‘in tactical planning stage’.”

Larry has become one of the most famous cats in the world.

Larry can be seen outside 10 Downing Street on the regular and even tries his best to photobomb press conferences and photo ops outside the famous residence. Larry knows he is the real boss of the house. Larry has lived with three different prime ministers, but he has been the one to stay at 10 Downing Street for nine years.

The police officers that guard 10 Downing Street are not the only people that Larry has won over. Larry has fans all over the world with his cute and sassy charm. Larry receives treats and gifts everyday from all over the world. Larry went from a rescue home to the most spoiled cat in all of the United Kingdom.

There is even a parody Twitter account that has been made in his honor, Larry the Cat. The account has almost 400 thousand followers!

The police guarding 10 Downing Street happily help Larry the cat gain entrance to his home because he has became an extra guard fin his own right. Larry can be seen standing guard next to the actual guards on many occasions. He has become like a “coworker” with the guards outside.

His official title might be Chief Mouser, but unofficially he guards more than mice on 10 Downing Street.
