It was 4:30 in the morning and still dark outside when Patrick Hennessey came across an unexpected sight in the middle of a dangerous, high-traffic road.
At first he couldn’t make out what the two shadows huddling in the dark were, but as he carefully inched closer and closer to the pair, it became clear that these were actually a couple of pit bulls doggos who had been injured and were in desperate need of care!
Patrick called the cops out of concern for their welfare, but the thanks the pit bulls gave wasn’t exactly what anyone had in mind.
When two Orange County Sheriff’s officers arrived at the scene, one of the pups suddenly lunged at the cop who reached out his hand…
…and promptly settled right into his lap! How’s that for a cheeky surprise?
It was obvious that these two sweet-natured gals were nervous and frightened, but they couldn’t hide their excitement at having been rescued by the nicest guys in town!
Sadly, one of the dogs was in a pretty sorry state, so Deputies Boggs and Reed applied gauze to her leg to help stop the bleeding.
Considering where they were found, it looked to them like her injuries were probably the result of being hit by a car.
A passerby named Adam took some pictures of the officers as they comforted and tended to the scared pups.
He was impressed with their kindness and wanted to give them kudos for going above and beyond.
He sent the photos to Florida’s Orange County Sheriff’s Office along with a note that read:
“These pictures I took depict a loving nature from our deputies and will tug at any animal lover’s heart strings. Thank you.”
The deputies, being the good guys that they are, refused to leave the pair’s side.
Just like their job description says, these two cops were intent on protecting and serving!
The adorable pups, who had pink collars around their necks, had already been abandoned once before by their former owners. They weren’t going to do that to them a second time.
So, the deputies stuck around and gave the sweet girls lots of cuddles and kisses until Animal Services finally arrived.
Officer Reed told the Orlando Sentinel that pitbulls are more cuddly than people give them credit for:
“There’s a big misconception when it comes to pitbull. I can’t tell you how many times I got nuzzled and licked by those dogs. Just a week after we brought them to Animal Services, they were the happiest dogs I’ve ever seen.”
The two pit bulls were named Liberty and Justice, which is fitting considering that’s exactly what they got after having been so carelessly tossed aside.
Not long after they were rescued and taken into a shelter, Orange County Animal Services gave a “pupdate” on the dog’s status.
“We want Justice (A362290) and Liberty (A362289) to find a forever home. Hopefully together. Please adopt them. The deputies are spoken for :)”
In an update video, Justice and Liberty were reunited with the two hero cops who saved them.
It was obvious that they remembered who the men were, as the girls were practically falling over themselves to give them some thank-you hugs!
Be sure to check out the video below to see Liberty and Justice thank the kindhearted cops who refused to abandon them when they were at the lowest point in their lives.
