Just like us humans, the temptation of food can sometimes get a little too much for our pets. In fact, dinner time is often one of the most anticipated times of day for cats and dogs, and portion control is important for pets who could just keep on eating until the cows come home.
With that being said, sometimes it’s hard to say no to your pets when they ever so politely beg for that last piece of chicken on your plate or whine by their dinner bowl as if they haven’t already eaten three full bowls already today. So before we know it, our pets can begin to look on the chonky side, and sometimes something needs to happen to be a wake-up call for both you and your doggo.
Drax was found living out on the streets of Queensland, Australia before he was rescued by Charmaine Hulley’s sister. He seemed to be in a bad way and was clearly malnourished, so Charmaine’s sister didn’t think twice about taking him home with her.
“My sister found him outside her local supermarket a couple of years ago just laying there curled up. He looked skinny and uncared for,” Charmaine told The Dodo. “She put him in the car and he just froze with fear and wouldn’t look at anyone.”
At the time, Charmaine was living with her sister and four small dogs, and she noticed that Drax settled into the family brilliantly. Despite homeless dogs sometimes being wary of other animals, he had soon made friends with his brothers and sisters, and he was clearly ready to relax into a happy life with his new family.
“He’s the most placid dog you could come across,” Charmaine said. “He’s the most loving and happy and laid-back boy that just adores all other dogs.”
Drax admired his brothers and sisters and was often found following them around or sharing nap times with them. Charmaine was due to move out into her own home and she wanted to take Drax with her, so she decided to adopt him another dog brother so that he wouldn’t be lonely.
A few years later, Charmaine returned to her sister’s house with Drax and his new brother in tow. It was a brilliant day where he got to hang out with his old siblings, but Charmaine was in for a bit of a shock.
After living out on the streets for a while, Drax now appreciated the finer things in life – and dinner times were one of his favorites. Without realizing it, the chonky boy had piled on a few pounds, and after a day of playing with the others in the garden, Drax had a bit of an embarrassing moment – and got stuck in the doggy door!
“Dad came home early and saw half the doggy door panel on the ground and looked inside and Drax came wandering down the hallway very casually with it on him,” Charmaine said. “I looked over and Drax was on the stairs looking at me … my mouth dropped.”
The hilarious pooch looked totally confused as to why he was now wearing the door, and it was a (somewhat comical) wake up call to Charmaine. Drax has now been put on a diet, in the hopes that one day he will be able to use the doggie door in the correct way again – as a door, not a fashion accessory.
