Miss P and Happy were taken in by the New York City-based rescue group Mr. Bones & Co after their elderly owner grew too sick to care for them. Elizabeth Frank, the founder of Mr. Bones & Co, told The Dodo:

“Typically, we don’t take ‘owner surrenders’ because nine out of 10 times, the owner is lazy and they decide they don’t want a dog anymore. But in this case, their former owner was getting sicker and sicker. It looks like she’ll end up in assisted living in the very near future, so she started working to find someone who would take her dogs. When we heard her story, we absolutely said ‘yes.’”

Frank fell in love with the two dogs immediately.

“Miss P has a double cleft palate, so she’s very unique looking, and we think she’s absolutely beautiful,” she said. “She’s got a little hodgepodge of teeth all over the place, and so sweet.”

As soon as she took the dogs in, Frank noticed something strange about Miss P: she’s extremely fearful. She cowers whenever someone raises their hand, and she flattens herself to the floor when anyone walks by her. This seemed odd to Frank since Miss P had come from such a loving home.

Frank did some digging into Miss P’s past. She called up Agnes, who was grateful to hear that her dogs were doing so well. She also explained why poor Miss P is so nervous.

“She told me that she had a family member who knew someone who was a backyard breeder, and he had a reputation for being not such a nice person,” Frank said. “And they happened to be over at his house about two years ago, and she immediately saw this little puppy who had this cleft palate, and she had asked if she could have that dog.”

The man said no at first, but then changed his mind, and he practically kicked the poor dog across the room to Agnes’ family member. Agnes took Miss P in and gave her all the love she deserved, but it still takes her a long time to trust people.

Luckily, Miss P has Happy to defend her.

Happy may be tiny, but he’s fiercely protective of his big friend. He’s also like a therapy dog for Miss P. Frank says:

“They grew up together and they are so bonded. There is only one other case where I’ve seen a dog so dependent on another dog. I could be anthropomorphizing this, but I do believe that [Happy] is aware to some degree that she needs him, and that he needs to be confident for her, even though he is one-eighth of her size.”

Happy and Miss P are in a foster home together now, and Frank is planning on adopting the dogs to the same home. She won’t let them get separated.

“After I saw these dogs together, I promised [Agnes], ‘Even if we have these dogs in our program for a decade and I have to adopt them myself, they’re not getting split up,’” Frank said.

Frank is now searching for the perfect forever home for Miss P and Happy, a place where Miss P will feel comfortable enough to open up. But no matter where they end up, one thing’s for sure: Happy will be at Miss P’s side, keeping her safe. These two are truly best friends for life!
