There are over 33 billion chickens in the world, about 4 chickens for every human. You can thank demand for poultry dishes and eggs for making those numbers possible.

And let’s face it, eggs and fried chicken are too good to pass up.

Annually, over 50 billion chickens are consumed for meat and eggs.

About 8 billion are slaughtered each year for meat, and that number might just keep increasing. We just love our KFC, don’t we?

To think that this all started with the domestication and cross-breeding of the wild junglefowl in Asia, no less than about 8,000 years ago. That one species gave rise to a bird that changed our food industry forever.

Now, this Chinese farmer is breeding 70,000 chickens and counting. Because you can never have too many, I guess.

Sang Qingjun is a farmer with big ambitions. He bred a flock of tens of thousands of chickens and shows no signs of stopping. Sang Qingjun rides a small tractor to herd the chickens across his fields and feeds them with corn.

Originally, his chickens ate the grasshoppers and other insects on his fields.

In the early days of the flock, his fields were home to such large insect populations that the chickens had no shortage of food.

And so multiply they did, until the natural food sources just wouldn’t cut it anymore.

When that time came, Sang Qingjun had to bust out the big-feeders to make sure each individual bird was well-fed and accounted for.

This is no longer a mere flock. This is an army. Sang Qingjun may as well lead an assault on Geonosis to rescue Anakin and Obi Wan.

He’s been a chicken farmer since 2019. With the grasslands providing enough range, that allowed him to breed such a massive flock.

But sometimes, he needs a helping hand or two. 70,000 chickens are a lot for one man to look after. So he occasionally pays other farmers to help him tend to the chickens or feed them.

With the income he makes from the farm and how much he pays the helpers, it creates a good local economy.

Even if he were to sell a few hundred of the birds for meat, he can easily have more chickens to replace them before long.

With these numbers, it’s difficult to run out.

Chicken dishes are, after all, just as popular in China as they are in the rest of the world.

The meat is used as filling for some dumpling dishes and other stuffed dishes.

That’s not even mentioning the ever-popular Chinese-style fried chicken. Whatever you’ll need them for, Sang Qingjun has you covered.

Back in 2019, Sang Qingjun said he wanted to hit a goal of 300,000 chickens.

Well, it’s been 4 years since then. I wonder if he’s hit that goal yet?

Well, if you happen to live near his farm and noticed that the collective clucking noises have gotten significantly louder, do let us know.
