In many ways, the relationship between cats and dogs can be compared to a brother/sister relationship. While there may be the occasional fight, most of the time they will get along just fine, or simply ignore each other’s presence. But some cats and dogs just refuse to get along- and it is undeniably the cat who is usually the bully in the situation. If you’re considering moving to introduce a cat and a dog into cohabitation, it may be worth reading this post first- as we’ve put together 50 of the best pictures showing times that owners wanted their cats and dogs to live together, but it didn’t work out as planned.
1. Outnumbered by cats.
The expression on this dog’s face clearly screams, “Help me!” It’s literally that look children get when they know they’ve done something wrong. But in this case, the cats are the ones to blame.
2. “Before and after my dog realizes I’m in the room.”
“I’m gonna eat you little bast… Oh, Hi Master… Noooo… we’re getting along well… see? I love him…” This dog knows the rules.
3. “My cat cat disapproves of human/dog love… I didn’t even know she could do that face…”
This cat is already fed up with the dog, and he hasn’t even been in their lives for that long. He simply can’t stand the way that dogs just love everything. Surely there must be something that makes them unhappy? “That’s just disgusting. Doesn’t he have any pride?”
4. Kittens are scary
Despite being over five times the size of these cute little kittens, this poor dog is absolutely terrified. We have to give it to him, kittens can be pretty crazy, and when there’s four of them backing you into one corner, it can get a little overwhelming. Someone needs to tell him that the worst thing you can do is show your fear!
5. “My cat recently discovered the dog bed.”
Cats are big fans of sitting in places where they aren’t supposed to be, so the dog’s bed is a huge upgrade from any cat bed. Sorry dog. There’s nothing you can do. The decision is final.
6. “Friend just got a German Shepard puppy. Asked how her cat is getting along with him, and was sent this pic.”
Cats spend a lot of their lives plotting and scheming, and it’s pretty obvious that this cat is in the middle of planning, “Operation, get rid of dog”. From this German Shepherd’s solemn expression, it seems as if the cat whispered, ‘This is your last day’ and the dog heard every word of it.
7. He took his bed.
The cat is going to sit wherever he damn fancies- even if that means that the dog is without a bed. We can’t stop laughing at the dog’s attempts to sit in the cat’s bed- he looks like a potted plant! The only solution here is to replace the cat bed with another dog bed.
8. This is what he has to put up with
After a long day at work, all this man wanted to do was have a nice, relaxing evening. But unfortunately, his pets weren’t about to let that happen. It’s the parent zone: become a zombie when the kids are fighting!
9. He did what now?
Think cats are the only evil ones? This dog literally pushed his cat sibling’s face into snow in one of the most brutal moves we’ve ever seen. Dog: 1, cat: 0.
10. His face says it all
The sweet thing about dogs is how non-confrontational they tend to be, and even when the cat is clearly the one in the wrong, they often won’t do anything about it. This dog wants nothing more than to get his bed back, but is he going to confront the cat? Absolutely not.
11. “I didn’t know I’d have to give up my dog when I got a cat. And by give up I mean the cat now owns the dog.”
On the other end of the spectrum, dogs and cats can surprise you by getting on more than you’d ever think they would. This cat has taken a liking to the family’s new dog- and now that she has, no one else is allowed to take him away from her. We dare you to try.
12. “Having a cone collar fitted at the vet was bad enough, then my dog had to come home to the cat.”
Having a cone has to be one of the worst things that can happen to an animal. Not only is it incredibly uncomfortable but it’s also hugely embarrassing- and boy, is the cat going to milk this situation. The dog will never live this down.
13. “Fiancée moved in and brought her dog. We were worried about the dog bullying the cats. We quickly realized the reverse was true.”
Dogs are often bigger and more hyperactive than cats- but don’t let that fool you into worrying for your cat’s safety. In fact, it’s usually the total opposite that happens, with the cats completely terrorizing the dog. Just look at that terrified expression.
14. “My pup is kind of a jerk.”
In an ideal world, dogs and cats would always be able to sit in close proximity in total harmony- but this certainly isn’t always the case. For absolutely no reason at all, this pup decided that he had had enough of sitting with the cat- and he wants to let her know who’s the boss of this house. “Mom, I didn’t do anything. I just wanted to pet her!”
15. “My buddy just posted this on facebook. He just got married and was trying to introduce his cat to his new dog.”
Ooooh, we would not want to be that dog. The expression on this dog’s face is absolutely priceless, and we fully believe that this picture should be nominated for some kind of award. It’s safe to say that this meeting could have gone better…
16. “My cat doesn’t like my dog, taking his hate to the next extreme.”
Any cat owners will be painfully aware of the fact that cats are not shy about where they place their butts down. But this cat really isn’t taking any consideration into this poor dog’s feelings. “You asked if you could sniff my butt dog, so what are you complaining about?”
17. Cat on Roomba Swats Dog PitBull
Despite the cat being the one drifting around on a Roomba, in her opinion, it’s the dog who’s in the way of her. How can the cat be taking this situation so seriously when she’s literally sitting on top of a Roomba? (and looks pretty damn hilarious) “I came, I vacuumed, I conquered.”
18. Cornered
Is there anything more terrifying than being cornered by four crazy kittens? At least this puppy has a lot more rights to be scared, given the fact that he only looks to be a few weeks old. “We need a sacrifice for the dark lord, Satan.”
19. Cat v dog v cat
It’s not like cats to take a dog’s side in a fight- but when that fight involves her neighborhood enemy, this cat knows where her loyalties lie. “How dare you mess with my people!”
20. “We just adopted a dog, this pic sums up how the cat feels about him.”
Cats don’t like to share the limelight with anyone, especially not a smelly old dog. They’re also not the best at hiding their true feelings. “Just so you know, I will be killing you in your sleep tonight.”
21. My dog’s first meeting with a cat did not go that well”
From the look on this dog’s face combined with the cute little band-aid on his nose, it’s clear that the dog’s first meeting with the cat did not go well. Those claws can be sharp! Better luck next time.
22. “Smell this for me”
It has to be said, dogs do love a good butt-sniff, so this cat must have eaten something seriously funky. By the dog’s reaction, that must have smelled really bad. “Oh Geez… Did you have brussels sprouts?”
23. “I’m not saying that my dog should respect the cat a little bit more, but…”
Knowing cats like we do, we’re not sure how this cat has tolerated such behavior for so long. We’re guessing that the dog received a taste of his own medicine pretty soon after this picture was taken. You can just see the anger in the cat’s face.
24. “Our cat doesn’t like the newest addition to the family, Gillie.”
Not everyone is happy about Gillie arriving, but the cat is choosing to keep a low profile as he plans the best way to get Gillie out of here. There’s only one animal ruling the roost around here, and it’s him.
25. Love you. ASSHOLE. Love you.
Cats go through a whole range of emotions every day, but this is to another level! It’s like when you’re snuggling with your boyfriend and then you remember something he did that p*ssed you off 2 years ago. You just can’t get over it.
26. Don’t let the cat keep you down
Why do dogs have to be so damn hyperactive all the time? This cat is fed up with her brother’s crazy energy, and she’s decided that she’s going to try and install some discipline into him. “Come on now, it’s time to grow up…”
27. “Adopting a dog soon so we have neighbor bring his dog over so our cats get used to them. Tonight this happened.”
A dog in the cat tree? Bad idea. Why did that dog think that the tree was for him to use? What they don’t know, is that he’s actually just hiding in there because he’s scared.
28. Right in the chops
This must be the most dramatic dog/cat fight picture of all time, and there’s no denying that the cat’s got a mean left hook! We wonder who won at the end of this? Something tells us it was the cat.
29. “The kitten really needs to stop bullying the dog.”
This is one of the most evil expressions we’ve ever seen on a kitten, yet he still manages to look flippin’ adorable. The dog, on the other hand, looks absolutely terrified. He’s never giving that ball back without significant bribery.
30. “There is an 80-pound dog in my lap because he is afraid of being catslapped.”
Big dogs honestly don’t realize just how big they are, and not only does this apply to lap-sitting, but it also applies to sibling rivalries as well. Despite this dog being absolutely huge in comparison to his cat sister, he doesn’t seem to see his size as an advantage at all. “Help me, mom!”
31. “Oh, were you sitting here? I didn’t notice…”
The strange thing is that they both look okay with the current situation… It’s like they finally came to an agreement. The cat lost whatever bet they had going.
32. Cat Won’t Let Dog off the Leash
This cat has seen her brother being walked many of times, and for that reason, she’s only trying to do her owners a favor and make sure he doesn’t run away. Because that would be sooo terrible. Promise…
33. Unpacking boxes
The cat gets her own box, but if the dog thinks that he’s allowed his own, then he’s got another thing coming. They’re both for her, and the dog is just going to have to find another place to sit. Everyone knows that cardboard boxes are a cat’s thing.
34. “When you introduce a dog to an 8 year old cat.”
The dog has long since got bored of chasing the cat, but he’s not coming down… not yet. He might stay here all night, just in case.
35. We don’t need you here, dog.
These cats were just enjoying their special bonding session when the silly little dog just had to be a part of things. In their eyes, he got what was coming for him. “No one messes with my friend.”
36. Exactly what the cat wanted
When you’re losing a fight, the easiest way to end things is by plonking your butt right on top of the cat’s face- or so this dog thinks. Luckily, this cat seems to be pretty good-natured about the whole thing, if a little shaken up.
37. “Cat hits sleeping dog”
The dog is like: “What? What was that?” and then goes back to sleep with the cutest smile on his face. In the cat’s eyes, everybody should have to cater to his needs, no matter how tired they may be. “Wake up, idiot. Playtime isn’t over yet!”
38. “The cat is eating the dog food while the dogs sit and watch. It’s not hard to tell who rules this house.”
It’s pretty uncommon for cats to like dog food, but maybe this kitty was just trying to show these two dogs who’s boss. In many cases, it’s actually better to feed the cat first, so that they don’t try and stick their head in the dog’s bowl. They know exactly what they’re doing…
39. “Housemate’s dog doesn’t accept that my cat won’t be his friend. Waits patiently outside my door everyday for my cat to trust him.”
If this picture doesn’t show how kind-hearted dogs are, then we don’t know what will. Despite the cat’s constant rejection, he still hasn’t given up. We’ll be his friend!
40. Checking for monsters under the bed
We’re not sure whether it was the cat or dog that was checking for the monster, but either way, it’s time for the dog to abort his mission. “No monsters under bed: che… wait: MONSTER, I repeat: MONSTER”
41. “Ok so we got a cat yesterday and we were kind of worried it would be afraid of our dog since she’s big and the cat hasn’t been with dogs before. Well it turned out the dog was afraid of the cat and she climbed on the corner of the sofa and refused to even look at him.”
This dog believes that if he can’t see the cat, then the cat can’t see him. Meanwhile, the cat has little to no interest in him anyway. As long as she still gets fed at the same time, then the dog can stay.
42. It’s a love/hate relationship.
Isn’t this just the most adorable family photo you’ve ever seen? The puppy is as happy as can be while the cat just wants him gone, but despite that, they both managed to pose for a pic together. We’re struck by how this photo sums up so many human relationships.
43. You can almost hear the pup go “rude.”
There’s nothing that a cat loves more than to pretend that everything in the house is a predator, whether that be their human or another animal. And this dog is quickly learning that the residents just have to put up with it. Just look at how he accepts the situation.
44. “Please-Stop, I can explain!! It was a mistake!”
We don’t know the story behind this, but whatever the dog’s done, he’s about to pay for it. Have you ever seen more terrified eyes before? It’s like he’s sat before the jury, judge, and the executioner.
45. “I think my cat is terrorizing my dog.”
Either the cat is terrorizing the dog, or the dog has just let one rip. And from the guilty expression on his face, we’d suggest that it’s situation number two. The cat mustn’t like what he smells.
46. Bullying a kitten
Wagon Kitten has noted this outage, and will bide his time for just the right moment to exact revenge. Again. And again. And again.
47. Instant regret
There’s no denying that this cat has great catching skills, but the last place he wants to put his paw is directly in the dog’s mouth, as it’s closing. In the end, they both lost the treat- but we hope the cat’s paw is okay! This could have ended a whole lot worse.
48. “It seems my cat and new puppy are getting along really well.”
The puppy is just trying to warn the cat that the toilet is full of germs. Or maybe he’s comforting the cat and holding its tail, while kitty recovers from a bad hangover. Either way, we think the pup is the innocent one in this situation.
49. We brought home a new puppy. This was our cat’s first reaction.
This cat is used to being the prettiest one in the room, and she isn’t a fan of having to share her owner’s attention now that the dog has arrived on the scene. “What did you do, hooman…”
50. Sometimes enough is enough
There comes a point when your patience wears so thin that you eventually just snap. He just had to keep on doing it. Gottcha.
