Everyone needs a hero once in a while— and now, thanks to a kindhearted 5-year-old boy, homeless cats have their own hero too!

Shon Griffin, from Philadelphia, is a warmhearted kindergartener with a passion for superheroes and cats.

His family discovered he had a gift for connecting with felines when, at only 3-years-old, Shon managed to befriend a cranky stray that had been eluding rescuers for over two years.

“The first time he wanted to go out with us, we were hesitant, because feral cats are shy and easily scared, and he was so little and rambunctious,” his aunt Kris Griffin told PEOPLE.

“As soon as Shon showed up, that cat came right over and started rubbing against his legs,” she continued. “This was a cat that we couldn’t even look at for two years without him running away from us.”

Ever since then, Shon has been helping his aunts take care of roughly 50 cats in four local shelters. He is always clad in a superhero costume and goes by ‘Catman’ when he’s on the job.

“When he is home with us, the indoor kitties get lots of love, affection, and playtime from Shon,” his aunts told ABC News. “They sleep with him and wake him up with kisses. He truly loves them, and they love him back just as much.”

When Shon goes out with his aunts, he helps fill empty food bowls and water dishes and gives out yummy treats— always with a side-dish of cuddles and love.

Catman’s special move is called the Superpower Scratch— and he always makes sure to give the kitties equal attention so they don’t get jealous.

His aunts told PEOPLE, “Shon simply has a magic touch with cats.”

“His dream is to go on [Ellen DeGeneres’] show, have her dress up as Bat Girl and go with him to pick up all the stay cats. Then for dinner, he’ll take her out to Chuck. E Cheese.”
