Even though some cats and dogs just can’t seem to share personal space, let alone a large comfy pillow or a long cozy couch, others actually get along quite nicely. Depending upon each pet’s personality and their owners’ patience and understanding, they can become best buds.
Dogs love chasing things smaller than them, which oftentimes equates to cats. But they can still do more than just coexist under one roof with constant spats.
When a dog raises its paw, that usually indicates he wants to play. But a cat may interpret that as a sign of attack, as in “He’s about to smoosh me!”
She’ll respond with a hiss and a right hook with claws extended. In turn, a cat may try to rub up against a dog’s leg wanting to be friendly, but a dog can misinterpret that as a threat particularly if it’s done near food and he is prone to food guarding.
Bobbie Cooper with Veterinary Pet Insurance, shared that it took some time, but eventually, their Schnoodle Pearl and their cats became buds.
“When we first got our dog, Pearl, our cats hissed and put up a fight; as a small puppy, Pearl was somewhat intimidated by them. But as time passed, they became friends, and before long, the dog and our two cats were curled up sleeping together on the couch.”
Pearl will clean 12-year-old Cleo’s ears. Isn’t that adorably odd?
“You see Cleo sitting there with her eyes closed as Pearl licks her ears, and you can just tell she is in heaven. It’s reassuring to know that dogs and cats can coexist in a household, and that I don’t have to worry about leaving them alone together. Plus, Pearl and the cats seem to each take comfort from having someone that is more like them than we are, even if they’re from different species.”
The owner of Bruce, a sweater-wearing dog, and a sweet cat named Jim caught the canine and feline engaged in interesting behavior. Bruce went blind 2.5 years ago due to diabetes and often gets scared.
The pair have been besties since Bruce was a puppy first brought into the home. They hit it off right away and still today have an unbreakable bond.
Jim understands that something is wrong with Bruce and takes extra special care of him in a human-like way. Jim will lead Bruce around the yard while they play hide and seek and carefully frolic about.
It’s incredible to see how tender Jim is toward Bruce. Their mom caught the two of them hanging out on the puppy pillow, Bruce wearing a blue sweater.
Bruce pads about a bit, then settles down on the pillow. The second Bruce lays down, Jim extends a paw and places it on Bruce’s back to comfort him.
It’s amazing to see!
Then Jim begins to tenderly lick Bruce on the ear, which could mean a few different things. It often is just what it looks like – an adorable show of affection.
A cat grooming a dog also shows that the cat has accepted the canine into his pack. It also leaves his saliva scent on the dog’s fur, marking his territory so to speak.
Their mom can be heard on the video as she records this sweet moment.
“Is that your friend?
After licking Bruce’s forehead, Jim switches to the nape of Bruce’s neck and his back. Bruce doesn’t seem to mind at all!
In fact, the tender touch of grooming likely soothes Bruce who lives in darkness due to his blindness.
Watch the video below and prepare to oooh and ahhh over this sweet show of affection between two unlikely besties. Do you have pets with a heartwarming bond like these two?
