Cats are confusing creatures. Sometimes, they appear to be the smartest animals on the planet, demanding the cleanest water and grooming themselves to perfection. Other times, they just act plain silly! If you love cats, though, it’s probably because of those things – their silliness and their arrogance. It makes for one funny (and furry) package.
If you asked someone, “what is the mascot of the internet,” most times, they would say cats.
Cats have been leading the charge as the “pets of the internet” nearly since its conception. At first, it was funny emails with cute cat pictures being sent around, demanding that you share it with 10 friends or suffer the consequences. As things evolved, more famous internet cat celebrities emerged.
Grumpy cat was the shift in an era. Cats had officially taken over the internet.

When Grumpy cat emerged, cats had officially taken over the internet. Alongside him were other names, famous felines like Piano cat and Nyan cat. Now, you can’t spend a day on the internet without seeing a furry patron.
As times progress, things change, things mature.
We’ve seen this story play out in artists hundreds of times. They come on the scene, full of energy and excitement, but eventually, have a realization. After that “awakening,” the artist is usually more somber and reflective with their work. It’s all a part of growing up.
In this video, we see a cat who is growing up and having her first existential crisis.
What is life without a good existential crisis now and again? You can’t have the unprecedented levels of fame that cats have enjoyed without contemplating the meaning of it all, can you? It’s a mixed bag.
When a cat has an existential crisis, however, it isn’t about death or religion – it’s about the presence of something strange—their ears.
While playing on the bed one morning, one cute grey cat was having the time of her life. Her owner was sitting behind her in bed, all snuggled up, and life couldn’t be better. When the cat lifted her head a bit further than she normally did, however, things changed.
She noticed something terrifying… her own ears.
Like a little kid learning of its own mortality, so it is for a cat to learn of its own ears. Thankfully, the amused human was able to capture the event on camera, giving us some insight into this “coming of age” experience for the cat.
Seeing her ears just peek over the frame, the cat is confused and scared.
Clawing at her own ears, she realizes that what she sees in the mirror isn’t a joke. She truly does have ears on top of her head. Trying to scratch them off doesn’t pan out, so she gets a bit closer to see what the heck these ears are.
With a final pat on her head, she understands – they are a part of her.
We don’t have much insight into the situation after that, as the video is only a few seconds long. What we DO know is this cat will never be the same. As the internet matures, so do cats and their understanding of the world and of themselves.
