Stories of incredible pets are in no short supply! Many people may even owe their lives to the heroism of their pets. Books like Where the Red Fern Grows give us a fictional example of how amazing animals can be, especially when protecting their owners.
We often hear of dogs who do something heroic.
A dog is usually the animal that is most likely to act in regard to its human safety. They are built for pack life and love their humans a bit differently than other animals.
What about cats!
I know, I hear you. “What about cats?!” It brings up the question of whether a cat would save your life if it had the chance. Normally quite aloof, would a cat save your life or would it do it just to save itself? Well, say what you will, but this one cat deserves a medal.
Joey the cat might have put cats on the “hero” map!

Joey is a black cat that was adopted by a loving family in Ontario, Canada. Black cats have lower adoption rates due to the superstition that surrounds them, but this family sure was glad they brought Joey into their home.
Owning the cat for over two years, he was a settled part of the family.

Thankfully, the family adopted him. Cats in the part of Canada that he was from are euthanized if they can’t find homes. The family saved Joey’s life and he decided to return the favor.
Scott and Ashika loved their cat before he did anything heroic.

With their loving feline at home, the duo was decidedly thankful for the little guy. They posted the story on their Instagram and started it with:
“My name is Joey and I’m the Hero that saved my family from a smoking crockpot,” he posted.
On a normal night in April…

Not too long ago, the couple went to bed on a normal night in April. They had decided they were going to prepare a slow-cooker meal and turned it on so they could wake up in the morning when it was ready!
A few hours later, something incredible happened.
Their cat is usually sound asleep late at night but this night was different.
“It was about 4:30 in the morning and for Joey to be trying to wake us up is unusual,” White told the Toronto Sun.
For Joey to be waking them up this early was very strange.
Waking up from their sleep, Scott noticed something was wrong.
As he woke up, he smelled smoke coming from somewhere in the house. Getting up and running around, the source of the smell was the kitchen. As he got closer, he discovered that the entire room was filling up with smoke!
Thankfully, Scott was able to turn it off and douse it before any lasting damage was done.
Scott was blown away that their slow cooker could even catch fire!
“We went to bed around midnight and it was fine,” White told CBC News. “And then it wasn’t fine when Joey found it.”
It seems like Joey the Hero Cat repaid the favor!

When Scott and his fiancee adopted Joey and saved his life, they never expected him to save theirs. What’s even funnier is their new puppy they bought as a guard dog slept through the whole ordeal!
