Victor is a very handsome kitty…who despises oranges.
When Victor’s owner, Irene Olocco decorated for the holidays this year, she had a bad feeling that her cat would ignore her ‘no climbing the Christmas tree’ rule.
He was a very friendly cat who was somewhat fearless when meeting other people.
So, it would make sense for him to be the curious cat who puts a paw up when house rules are decided.
Cats know what they like and don’t like.
There is no doubt when a cat isn’t too keen on something. Victor had one fear that Irene learned early on.
Irene had an idea.
It just so happened that Victor was a very brave cat but had one fear that had stuck with him since his younger years.
Victor has a deep fear of tangerines.
“We were together on the couch, I grabbed a tangerine and, as I began to peel it, he hissed and ran away,” Irene Olocco told The Dodo.
Tangerines have come in handy.
“I began to put oranges or tangerines on the furniture where I didn’t want him to climb on and it worked,” Olocco told The Dodo.
She used other similar fruits to help keep Victor away from furniture and other items.
Tangerines will save her Christmas tree!
After remembering this one important detail, Irene decided to give it a try. She was tired of telling her curious cat to stay away from the Christmas tree decorations.
“I was sick of yelling at him to not touch the balls,” Olocco told The Dodo “In the middle of the morning I decided to eat a tangerine and the brilliant idea struck … It worked immediately!”
Victor’s fun was about to end.
Irene started to line the bottom of her Christmas tree with tangerines and she could tell right away that Victor was not exactly thrilled.
Irene took a photo of him sitting near the tree but far enough back that he was safely away from the tangerines. Her plan had worked.
Victor goes viral.
Irene decided to post the photo on Facebook with the caption, “My cat is afraid of tangerines, so I’ve created a force field to protect the Xmas tree…”
The post was a hit with cat owners across the world, especially those with Christmas tree-loving cats.
Even though not all cats fear oranges, hey, it’s worth a try!
No more kitties in the Christmas tree.
Well, things are all good in Irene’s home with Victor staying well away from the Christmas tree.
The tangerine ‘force field’ is working wonders and the Christmas decorations are all intact.
Even though we feel a little sad that Victor has such a deep phobia of oranges, we can’t help but cheer for Irene and her clever idea.
No doubt that the tangerine force field will be a yearly tradition in Irene’s household.
So sorry sweet Victor!
