Cats and dogs are beloved family members and they are often considered children by their owners. When a human baby arrives and becomes part of the family, the entire family must adjust to the new dynamic.
To create a safe and positive home environment once the new baby arrives, expectant parents should prepare their cats for their new life with a baby.
The Humane Society suggests that you should begin introducing your cat to your baby before the baby arrives.
For example, you should invite friends over with their babies to familiarize your cat with how a baby moves and acts.
There’s no need to force your cat to interact with the baby, but you should give them treats to make the interaction a positive experience.
You can also begin setting up your home to prepare for the baby, including putting up the bassinet, baby swings, and strollers by the door. This way, your cat becomes familiar with the new changes in the environment.
This video shows Minnie the cat being introduced to the baby, even before the baby is born.
Minnie enjoyed snuggling up to her owner’s pregnant belly.
When the baby arrives, Minnie’s owner tells her, “That’s your new sister!”
Minnie eyes the baby warily at first. After a few moments, she cautiously approaches the baby carrier and begins sniffing the baby. You can tell that she’s very curious about her.
Minnie also peers at the baby when the carrier is put on the coffee table.
When her owner cradles the new baby on the couch, Minnie jumps up and walks toward the baby. She sniffs the baby’s hands and body.
In the next clip, the baby is being carried by her owner and Minnie is lying down on the baby’s foot.
After a few seconds, she walks up and lays right beside the baby, snuggling behind the baby who is being carried by her dad.
Throughout the video, it’s obvious that Minnie is becoming more and more comfortable with the baby, even half-climbing her back before laying down on her.
Minnie also enjoys being rocked together with her new sister. It’s almost like she feels like she is a baby as well.
She adoringly puts a paw on her owner’s face and snuggles against his chest.
As the baby gets older, Minnie also gets used to her being around her more. When the baby crawls around, Minnie just watches her and is unfazed by the baby’s newfound mobility.
The baby also begins to pet Minnie and her dad reminds her to be gentle with the cat. Minnie seems to be unsure at first, but she allows the baby to pet her.
We love her adorable baby giggle when she’s watching Minnie.
Did we mention they also have a pet dog?
So now, Minnie, the baby, and a dog make a happy family.
The three of them seem to get along and we’re happy that the baby will have instant playmates and furry older siblings as she grows up.
