We love cats. That’s just a fact— but as crazy cat lovers, we can sometimes get a rather… interesting reputation. The fact of the matter is though, that there are actually a ton of benefits associated with being a crazy cat lover— and we’re going to go over them here! So, the next time somebody tries to give you grief over your cat-loving ways, just pass them this little list that proves cat lovers truly are some of the greatest people around.
Here’s why:
#1— Cat Lovers Are Smarter Than Other People
Back in 2014, researchers conducted a study which measured the intelligence of cat lovers versus dog lovers. The results weren’t surprising, of course. Cat lovers scored higher on intelligence than people who described themselves as dog lovers. Even better though, people who claimed to not like animals had the lowest intelligence scores of all.
Additionally, Steve McKeown, founder of MindFixers, told VT: “Cat people are more likely to possess university degrees than dog owners. Educated people tend to work longer hours and opt for pets that compliment their personal circumstance and lifestyle.”
So, there you have it. Science says cat lovers are the smartest bunch around. Suck on that, Poochie.
#2— Cat Lovers Are More Relaxed Than Other People
A cat’s purr has been shown to have amazing stress-reducing effects. In fact, sources say felines are better at reducing stress than any other kind of animal.
Dr. Rebecca Johnson, director of the Research Center for Human Animal Interaction, explains, “Purring is an auditory stimulus that people attribute to peacefulness and calmness. That gives us positive reinforcement for what we’re doing and can contribute to the whole relaxation effect when we interact with our cats.”
#4— Cat Lovers Are More Attractive Than Other People
I’m not sure whether this is the same amongst the sexes— but a British poll discovered that while 82% of women say they are more attracted to a man who likes animals 90% of women said they think men who own cats are “nicer”.
You taking notes, guys?
#3— Cat Lovers Are Happier Than Other People
It’s no secret that animals are a great way to deal with depression. However, with cats, it seems to go a bit deeper. When you pet your cat, your brain releases surges of oxytocin, the “feel good, bonding” chemical in your brain.
Treatment for depression often uses serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), pills that increase the levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin and oxytocin are released at the same time— so whenever you pet your cat, not only are you two bonding, but you’re actually helping to keep depression at bay. Woohoo! Thanks, Fluffy!
#5— Cat People Have Healthier Hearts Than Other People
Another study, conducted in 2008, examined the risk of heart attacks in longtime cat owners versus people who don’t own cats. After following nearly 4,500 people, they determined that people with cats were 30% less likely to die from a heart attack than people without cats.
This doesn’t just apply to heart attacks though. A later study also confirmed that cat owners are less likely to die from any cardiovascular event, including strokes. Critics argue that maybe people who prefer cats just have less stress to begin with, but don’t let them fool you. We know the truth.
