Cats can be quite difficult to understand. Unlike dogs, cat can be extremely independent. These little hunters are much more in touch with their wild side than their pet counterparts, so humans often wonder what they can do to better bond with their friendly felines. Here are some great ways you can better understand your cat.

Raised Tail

If your cat’s tail is raised upward and curled at the end, he or she is one happy camper. If you cat twitches his tail, it means that he is either excited or worried. Fur sticking out sideways means something similar; if your cat is not being threatened in any way, this means he is excited to see you.

Straight Tail

If your cat sticks its tail straight up and bends its back, this is not a great sign. This posture is a display of extreme aggression, meaning your cat most likely feels threatened. The cat may lower the tail a little to communicate that he is afraid. A very low tail is your cat’s way of showing fear and guilt, so be sure to look around the room to see what mischief lurks.

Big Eyes

As with all animals, cats use their eyes to communicate important messages. Dilated pupils can indicate playfulness or aggression, while direct eye contact is an unfailing sign of trust. If your cat blinks slowly, it means that he is calm and comfortable.

Rubbing

When a cat rubs against you, this is more than simply a sign of affection. The animal is marking you as his property, meaning that he likes having you around. Poking your leg with a wet nose is another cat way of showing love. Your cat will only poke you if he feels safe around you.

Head-Butting

If your cat likes to lightly head-butt you, you are doing something right. This is a cat’s way of showing friendliness, indicating that you are something more than the food-bringer and shelter-provider. If your cat is willing to lick you, this is a sure sign that he has accepted you into his family.

Biting

We might think it’s weird when a cat bites our hair, but this is actually a display of affection. When your cat licks and bites your hair, he thinks he is cleaning you. If the cat bites you, however, this is an indication that the creature wants a little personal space. We all have a bubble, right?

Raised Nose

Cats will acknowledge passersby with simple actions. They will raise their noses and tilt their heads to show that they see the other animals. As highly individualistic creatures, cats often feel the need to “fend for themselves” when they are around other creatures.

Flattened Ears

Pressing the ears against the head is a cat’s way of displaying worry. This action doesn’t always mean there is a threat, however. If a cat is exposed to a new smell, he is likely to exhibit this behavior.

Mewing

Cats like to lightly mew when they are excited to see someone. The more noise your cat makes upon your arrival, the more excited he is that you are home.

Mixed Noises

If a cat mixes multiple noises, such as purring and meowing, he is most likely demanding something. This is a good time to check that your pet has enough food and water.

Low Meow

A low meow is not a good sign. Cats will make this noise when they are irritated or ready to defend themselves. Whenever you hear a low meow, pay attention to what your cat’s needs may be.

How To Earn Your Cat’s Trust

Cat’s may have a complex communication system, but there are 3 surefire ways to earn their trust. Whenever you place your cat on the ground, make sure its paws actually reach the floor. Cats always land on their feet, but if you make it hard for your cat he will be sure not to like you.

When you want to pet your cat, sit on the floor with your legs crossed. Look directly at him, then outstretch your hand. In doing this you will gain the cat’s trust, and then he will come to you.

Cats, like most animals, are extremely perceptive. Cats only want to be around humans who are calm and collected. Speak softly to your cat, and avoid acting in anger around him.
