One day, Decan Anderson was relaxing in his apartment in Denmark when he saw a surprising sight. A tiny, baby red squirrel fell from the roof his apartment building and landed in the apartment complex’s garden.

After a fall like that, Anderson knew the baby squirrel would be badly injured. He rushed out to the garden and waited to see if the squirrel’s mother came back for him. The squirrel’s mother did approach him, but when she saw the baby was injured, she left and didn’t come back. When Anderson saw that, he took the squirrel inside his apartment and called the veterinarian.

While Anderson was calling the vet, one of his cats approached the squirrel.

Anderson had two cats, a brother and sister named Tiger and Coco. Tiger was an outdoor cat, and so he wasn’t home when Anderson brought in the squirrel. But Coco was there, and she was curious about who this little creature was. She approached the squirrel slowly.

And then, to Anderson’s surprise, Coco nuzzled and licked the squirrel. Anderson realized then that Coco had decided the squirrel was her baby!

Anderson brought the squirrel to the vet, where he learned his injuries thankfully weren’t too bad. Then, Anderson brought the squirrel home and gave him a name: Tintin.

Over the next few weeks, Anderson—and Coco—nursed the squirrel back to health. Tintin got used to his domestic surroundings, and Anderson worried he wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild. Anderson knew it was illegal to keep red squirrels as pets in Denmark. But luckily, Anderson was able to get permission to keep Tintin. Just like that, Tintin had his new forever home!

Over the next two years, Tintin grew from a baby squirrel into a happy adult squirrel.

Tintin liked spending time with Anderson and his two kids, but Coco was his one true love. Coco always kept a close eye on the little squirrel. She also made sure her brother Tiger knew that Tintin was part of their family and not something to eat.

Unfortunately, when Coco was five years old, she passed away in her sleep. Anderson, Tintin, and Tiger were all devastated by their loss. Tiger had an especially hard time—he kept looking for his sister everywhere.

After losing Coco, Tiger seemed to decide that was his job to protect Tintin now. Soon, the cat began cuddling with his squirrel brother. The two became inseparable.

Now, Tiger and Tintin are still as close as can be.

Tiger and Tintin go on adventures together, and they also take lots of naps side-by-side. The two both miss Coco, but they’ve found comfort in each other.
