When Miss Kitty’s kittens died, she stole the newborn puppies from her sister, a dog.
It isn’t hard to find a story of interspecies love, but few will touch your heart as much as that of Miss Kitty. Back in spring of 1993, Miss Kitty gave birth to kittens and was ready to take care of them, nursing them and teaching them the ways of being a cat.
Miss Kitty’s humans, Missy and Ryan, didn’t know where the kittens were until they followed Miss Kitty across the street to the area under a neighbor’s trailer. According to Ryan:
“They didn’t look very healthy at all from the day we found them. And they eventually died.”
Miss Kitty was understandably heartbroken, as any animal or human would be in this situation.
Instead of staying depressed, however, Miss Kitty took action. Her sibling, a cocker spaniel named Smoochie, gave birth to puppies about the same time Miss Kitty had her kittens. Ryan explained:
“Smoochie didn’t want anything to do with the puppies at all. They would be lying around at Smoochie’s house out there and she would just drag them around with a chain and pay no attention. Even their whines didn’t mean anything to her when they were hungry.”
While Miss Kitty wanted to raise her babies, but got her opportunity taken away from her by their deaths, the mother puppy had the opposite issue. She had almost no interest in caring for the pups. Miss Kitty saw the opportunity and decided to adopt the neighbor’s puppies.
That’s when Miss Kitty took action, and her humans noticed.
Missy explained:
“I guess Miss Kitty, when, after her kittens died, she felt the need or want to go take over them [the puppies]. So we came home one evening and there were five puppies missing.”
With all the puppies gone, Missy and Ryan were wondering where those pups could be. Missy went on to say that her neighbor “saw Miss Kitty stealing them.”
Linda, the neighbor, explained that she was eating her lunch and:
“I heard the puppy start screaming. And it screamed and screamed and I finally got up to go see what it was. And that’s when I came to the door and I saw Miss Kitty going across the yard with one of the little puppies in her mouth.”
According to Linda, Miss Kitty brought all the puppies over in this manner.
Even after her neighbor’s account, Missy says:
“I didn’t believe it, but I looked up under the trailer [where Miss Kitty had made her den] and they were up under. […] And then I had to cut them out.”
Once Missy and Ryan had moved Miss Kitty and her newly adopted puppies to a safer spot, they called up the local news. According to the reporter:
“It was just amazing to see this cat nursing these puppies.”
Missy told the reporter that she wondered if Miss Kitty would also adopt stray kittens.
So, when they aired the story, they included a tag at the end asking those with stray kittens to call Missy.
Someone who had recently found two abandoned kittens did just that. Miss Kitty adopted the new additions, as well, without any hesitations. According to Missy:
“She took right up with them, but she wouldn’t leave the puppies alone.”
It was clear to everyone involved that Miss Kitty loved the puppies and would never give them up.
The only concern at this point was whether Miss Kitty would have enough milk. Missy talked to her vet, who said that the cat milk would be fine for the pups but was concerned about the supply. At his suggestion, the puppies also nursed from Smoochie, who was forced to feed them.
In the end, the entire family ended up happy and healthy. We only wish that cameras took better-quality video in 1993 so we could Miss Kitty and her adopted children in more detail.
