Are you an avid reader who just happens to love good coffee and furry little animals? Then you will definitely are going to appreciate our story today as it embodies every single thing that a true book lover looks for.
Welcome to Otis & Clementine’s Books and Coffee, a bookstore like none other.
This beautifully picturesque bookstore can be found just outside of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. Now, it might be a little further up from where you live, but it will definitely worth the trip if you are lovers of books, coffee, and…kittens!
You see this particular bookstore not only is a place where you could buy your latest book, but it also doubles as a “kitten rescue”! Yes, you have heard right, this remarkable place co-operates with the South Paw Conservation Nova Scotia rescue group, and tries to find homes for the little kittens it fosters.
According to a representative from the South Paw Conservation, “Otis & Clementine’s Books and Coffee is one of many loving foster homes that provide an enriching environment for our kittens and cats. It’s amazing to have this unique platform to help home our kitties”.
The fostering scheme started by the bookstore owner Ellen Helmke last year when she decided to help out with the rescue and adoption of kittens.
Helmke realized that she had plenty of space in her store to make this plan work, and so far it has been a success as more than 30 cats were adopted from her shop.
The news that Otis & Clementine’s Books and Coffee, offers more than coffee and books, spread rather quickly across Nova Scotia, and many are the visitors who just go to the shop only to see the little cuties!
“People come here specifically to see the cats, and then some people just wander in to look at books and discover there are kittens,” Helmke told Global News. “Either way, the response has been really great—I mean, who doesn’t love kittens, right?”
People who have previously adopted an animal from a rescue or a shelter might know that the adoption process isn’t that “fast”. The same applies to the adoption process at Otis & Clementine’s Books and Coffee.
As the bookstore is co-operating with the South Paw Conservation, they have to follow all the necessary steps like in any other rescue.
The adoption fee is around 255 Canadian dollars and it covers everything, including any medical expenses. Also, the adoptive family needs to provide references in order for the adoption to be approved.
As Helmke said, “I’m so happy to make my customers happy when they come in and they’re just thrilled to see a kitten they weren’t expecting… It’s amazing and makes me happy to come to work.”
It truly seems like a very beautiful and serene environment for the kittens and for the visitors too, where they can enjoy a cup of coffee while playing with these adorable furry balls. If you are planning a trip over to Canada, don’t hesitate to add Otis & Clementine’s Books and Coffee to your itinerary.
Who knows, maybe you will return home with a new friend!
