Security Camera Captures Woman Helping Freezing Stray Dog

January 10th, 2019

When a woman named Duygu Elma walked out of a café in Zonguldak, Turkey, she saw a stray dog sitting on the sidewalk. It was a freezing and rainy night, and the poor pup was shivering badly. The 23-year-old news editor immediately decided that she wanted to help the dog.

Duygu stopped outside the café door and looked down at the pup. When she saw how cold he was, she unfolded her scarf and gently draped it over him.

The pup gratefully curled up under the scarf—he was so happy to have something to keep him warm.

Duygu didn’t think anyone was watching her help the stray dog, and she didn’t take any photos or video of the stray dog herself. But little did Duygu know, her kindness was captured on the café’s security camera.

The video of Duygu’s selfless act has now gone viral, and it has been viewed over 200,000 times. Across Turkey, people were amazed by the kindness Duygu showed the stray dog.

“Humanity is not dead,” said Turkish news outlet Gundem67.

When the video first went viral, nobody knew the woman helping the dog was.

But then, one of Duygu’s friends recognized her and told Duygu about the video. Duygu was amazed when she learned how many people had seen this video.

“I couldn’t imagine that my actions would receive this attention. I’m very surprised about it,” Duygu told The Dodo. “The weather was so cold. I just couldn’t take it when I saw him shivering.”

Duygu isn’t the only person in Turkey who has gone out of their way to help stray dogs keep warm.

In 2017, a photo of people helping stray pups in Istanbul went viral. The city was hit by a rare snowstorm, and many of the stray dogs in the city were stuck out in the cold. Istanbul residents began going around and covering the pups in blankets. The dogs were so grateful to have some warmth!

“It was fabulous,” Instanbul resident Ali Çelik told The Dodo. “The people were there to help the animals, not so that others could see them helping.”

During this same snowstorm in 2017, another photo of someone helping a stray dog in Istanbul went viral.

Arzu Inan, a manager at clothing store Penti, saw a few stray dogs huddling outside her shop. Inan decided to let the dogs sleep in her warm shop, and she gave them plenty of cozy blankets.

“Don’t forget that only true love warms,” Inan wrote on Facebook.

Köpek üşümez diyen olursa ağır konuşurum!Zonguldak 'ta mağazadan çıkan bir bayan, üşüyen köpeğimizi görüyor. Ne yapsam diye düşünürken boynundan çıkardığı şalı üzerine örtüyor. Insanlar yavaş yavaş bile olsa artık bilinçleniyorlar. Umutluyuz
