Brutus the Bullmastiff is a big, loving, and cuddly dog. Since Bonnie Michalek and her husband first adopted Brutus in 2016, all he has wanted to do is spend time with them and sleep next to them.
While Brutus loves both his parents, he’s a true mama’s boy at heart. And so, when Michalek became pregnant with her first child, Brutus got even more protective of her.
“Brutus knew I was pregnant before I did — he definitely sensed it before I knew,” Michalek told The Dodo. “On the nights my husband was working Brutus refused to be in his crate.”
At first, Michalek just thought Brutus was being clingy. But looking back, she realized he was trying to keep her safe.
Michalek knew that Brutus would be a good big brother for her little baby:
“He’s always loved kids,” Michalek said. “Every time he’s heard kids outside laughing he gets excited.”
When the baby was due, she and her husband brought Brutus over to her mom’s house. They kept him there for the first few days after their son, Kayden, was born. Once they were ready, they brought Brutus back home. Michalek gave Brutus lots of hugs and kisses to show him how much she loved him. Then, she let him into the room to meet Kayden.
As soon as Brutus got into the room with the baby, he made a beeline for him:
“Brutus completely bypassed my husband to meet Kayden. He immediately wanted to give him kisses and snuggle up to him.”
Michalek shared a sweet video of this moment to Brutus’s Instagram page.
From that moment on, Brutus and Kayden were inseparable. Brutus appointed himself at Kayden’s protector, and he always made sure his little brother was safe.
Brutus also got worried about Kayden when he started crying. Brutus would watch him, wishing he could help. And then, one day, Brutus did something that surprised his parents.
Like many pups, Brutus has a toy that he treasures above all the rest of his possessions. Brutus’s all-time favorite toy is a plush yellow toy his mom calls the “fluffball.” Brutus will carefully carry this toy around his mouth, making sure not to tear it. Brutus truly loves this toy.
Since the fluffball always makes Brutus feel better, he thought it would also help comfort Kayden. And so, when Kayden started crying, Brutus brought his favorite toy over to the baby and gently put it next to him.
Michalek was amazed by this—Brutus never let the toy out of his sight! From that action, it was clear just how deep Brutus’s love for the baby was. Now, Brutus brings the toy to Kayden every time he starts crying.
The Michaleks are looking forward to their lives with their two boys. They’re already planning future vacations to take with Brutus and Kayden:
“We go to our cabin every summer and we go hiking and Brutus has loved that ever since he was a puppy. I went there as kid. I’m super excited to bring Kayden along.”
Brutus and Kayden are a sweet pair of brothers who are always going to look out for each other. These two have a great future ahead of them!
