Brutus the bullmastiff lives in Northern California with his mom and dad, and he has become very used to being the baby of the house. He has an extensive selection of toys that he loves to play with, and before long they are eventually torn to shreds. The only toy that remains in (somewhat) pristine condition is Brutus’ sacred fluffball.
“It’s the only toy that he won’t tear apart in five minutes,” Bonnie Michalek, Brutus’ human, told The Dodo.
Aside from toys, Brutus had another love in his life- children. The friendly pup is incredibly gentle, and while some dogs get jealous, Brutus’ mom and dad just knew that he would be the perfect dog to bring up with children.
“He’s always loved kids,” Bonnie said. “Every time he’s heard kids outside laughing he gets excited.”
So when Bonnie became pregnant and gave birth to a son named Kayden, the meeting between baby and dog was much anticipated. Brutus seemed to be aware of the tiny human that was growing in his mom’s tummy, and throughout her pregnancy, he was extra protective of Bonnie.
“Brutus knew I was pregnant before I did — he definitely sensed it before I knew,” Bonnie said. “On the nights my husband was working Brutus refused to be in his crate. Looking back I thought he was just being a brat but really he was trying to protect me.”
Brutus rarely left Bonnie’s side, so she knew that it was important to make him feel involved in the whole pregnancy process. Although Brutus loved children, it was important that he didn’t feel left out when the baby arrived.
On the day Bonnie gave birth, Brutus went to stay at her parents’ house. And when Bonnie went to pick him up, she made sure to give her mama’s boy some extra love and attention before introducing him to the baby.
“I made sure to pay some attention to him,” Bonnie said.
Then she let Brutus come in and meet the baby.
“Brutus completely bypassed my husband to meet Kayden. He immediately wanted to give him kisses and snuggle up to him.”
Brutus instantly fell in love with his little brother, and since the day the pair met, they haven’t left each other’s side. Brutus seems to see himself as a second mom to Kayden, and whenever he hears the sound of him crying, he tries to comfort him with one of his most prized possessions – the sacred fluffball.
“He grabs his favorite toy to bring it to Kayden to console him!” Bonnie said.
Adorably, as the fluffball always gives Brutus some comfort, he believes that it will do the same to Kayden. And despite it being his most special possession, he still has the heart to share it with his baby brother. Adorable!
As soon as Kayden gets a little bit bigger, the family is looking forward to doing things all together.
“We go to our cabin every summer and we go hiking and Brutus has loved that ever since he was a puppy. I went there as kid,” Bonnie said. “I’m super excited to bring Kayden along.”
