Have you ever been watching a movie and then found that your dog has been watching along with you? You see their concentrated gaze on the TV and you realize that they’re a lot more interested than you would have thought!
Apparently, our pet pooches can perceive images on TV similarly to how humans do, and they’re also smart enough to recognize onscreen images of animals as they would in real life — even animals they’ve never seen before!
Meet Elvis and Khaleesi, two eight-year-old bulldog siblings who love to watch TV! The dogs are well-loved by the public — their YouTube account has over 256k subscribers and their Instagram over 5,000 followers. Their YouTube channel describes the siblings as ‘two bratty bulldogs who enjoy watching TV and mouthing off to our parents!’ and we think this really sums up the two.
One of the special things about the dogs’ YouTube channel is the videos of the dogs watching TV. They have noticeable reactions to the action that is happening and seem to be transfixed to the screen.
One video in particular caught our attention, and it features Khaleesi as she watches one of the classic scenes from Peter Jackson’s King Kong.
The pooch is staring intently at the screen as she watches the action unfold. This film is very action-packed, and Khaleesi’s parents have obviously chosen to record this scene as they knew that they were about to get a good reaction out of their pooch!
This film has lots of animals to keep Khaleesi hooked, including dinosaurs and terrifying giant apes. Let’s see what the pup makes of this.
At the beginning of the action scene, Khaleesi sits bolt upright and stares at the screen, as if she can sense that the actress is in danger. Then, as the giant ape is introduced into the scene, the brave bulldog jumps up and begins to bark! She can see now for certain that the actress is in danger and she wants to help her.
Khaleesi barks and barks as if she’s trying to scare the bad guys away, and it’s so adorable to watch. But why does she react in this way? The National Geographic says:
“Beyond biology, how dogs react to TV—whether it’s running around, barking excitedly, or just ignoring it—may come down to personality or breed.” They also add, “Different dogs, like people, have different personalities. Some are territorial, some are not; some like people, some hate people; some are predatory, some aren’t; some are pushy, some are shy.”
This isn’t the only movie that this brave pooch has become transfixed with! On the dogs’ Instagram account, a video was shared of Khaleesi watching The Muppets. It was captioned ‘Starting out slow with Khaleesi’s TV time during her recovery. Everything was fine until “The Count” showed up….’ and shows Khaleesi just chilling in front of the TV- that’s until the vampire Muppet shows up! She then begins to bark as if to say, “Go away please!”
Who knew that dogs could watch TV too?
