Typically a lion is thought to be the “king of the jungle.” However, even the toughest soldier can meet his demise if he’s outnumbered more than 20 to one.
In a clip from BBC Earth’s Dynasties, a young male lion named Red faces a frightening situation like this when he becomes surrounded by a clan of hyenas. The scene puts viewers on the edge of their seats and has been watched millions of times by people across the globe.
The wilds of Africa can be a dangerous place for any living creature. Strong animals too can quickly become prey if not careful.
As a growing male, Red decides to leave his pride and explore their territory on his own. But in no time, he makes a wrong turn and finds he’s no longer alone…
Suddenly, the scene becomes heart pumping with Red caught in the middle of a hyena clan. They eerily make their “laughing” sounds as they circle their meal.
According to Smithsonian, there’s a misconception that spotted hyenas mainly scavenge their food. In reality, up to 95% of it they get themselves.
On the day captured in the video, young Red is the target of nearly two dozen of these animals. He watches them closely, yet, is completely trapped and can’t escape.
The clan attempts to tire Red out by running around him and nipping at his body. Although he’s upset, there are just too many of them to fight at once.
In a way, the clip mirrors a scene from a movie where a single one is being harassed. You’re rooting for the “little guy” – despite the fact that it seems his fate is sealed.
Finally, Red starts to show his strength. Just like you or I might do, if he’s going to go out – he’s going to go out fighting.
The lion tries to defend himself against the hyenas, but it’s evident that he’s quickly losing steam. It seems that he’s about to become the clan’s dinner right before your eyes.
Then out of nowhere, there’s a special twist…
Another male lion named Tatu hears the sounds in the distance. Just like the hero of a film, he decides to go and help save his friend.
In the nick of time, Tatu comes jogging in like a knight in shining armor. Because the numbers have changed, the hyenas begin to back down from Red.
According to the BBC Earth narrator:
“Even for 20 hyenas, a pair of male lions is too much to take on.”
The moment turns touching as the buddies walk off together heading back to their pride. They beautifully nuzzle each other and show affection – with Red obviously very appreciative that Tatu saved his life.
People from around the world have been fascinated with this clip. Not only does it give you an up-close look into nature, but the ending has viewers cheering from their seats.
In less than a year the video has gathered more than 29 million views.
