Copper is a four-year-old Doberman who loves his family more than anything else.
When Copper’s mom, Jennifer Jayne, got the dog, she expected him to just be a family pet. But the dog quickly proved how smart he was.
One night in 2016, Copper ran to Jayne’s son Connor’s room. He started barking frantically at the door, and so Jayne went in. Inside, she found Connor having a seizure. Terrified, Jayne called an ambulance.
After this incident, Jayne got Copper registered as a service and emotional support dog. The pup began looking after Connor full-time.
Connor suffers from nocturnal seizures, and he also has ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, and a chronic headache disorder. When Connor is about to experience an anxiety attack, Copper lays against him, acting like a weighted blanket. This helps calm Connor down.
In 2017, Copper started experiencing his own health issues when he began limping badly. Jayne brought him to the vet, who said the dog might have Wobbler’s Disease.
Copper needed MRIs, and then he would need laser therapy to help ease the pain in his spine. This was all very expensive, and Jayne knew she needed help paying for treatment. She started a GoFundMe page where she shared Copper’s story. Then, Connor did something that surprised her.
Connor decided to hold a garage sale where he would sell most of his toys. He said helping Copper was more important to him than his toys.
Copper and Connor’s emotional story moved everyone, and soon Jayne raised over $14,000 dollars on her GoFundMe page. She says that any money left over after Copper’s treatment will go to helping other dogs like Copper.
“Your donations have helped make this therapy possible! It is very expensive and without your generosity we would not have the options we do so we thank you, so very much,” Jayne wrote on the GoFundMe page.
Jayne took Copper for his MRIs, where she learned that there’s a good chance he doesn’t have Wobbler’s Disease. The vet believes that the problem is in Copper’s spine and muscles. Because of that, the vets think that extensive laser therapy and rehab will help cure the dog.
Copper recently began laser therapy. Jayne shared a video on Copper’s Facebook page showing the brave dog getting his first treatment.
Connor is staying by Copper’s side during his whole treatment. The two even have matching goggles to wear during Copper’s laser therapy!
Connor and Copper are doing a great job looking after each other—it’s clear that these two share an incredible, unbreakable bond. If you’d like to learn more about Copper’s treatment, check out his Facebook page.
