But sometimes, circumstances force us to make choices that leave an irreplaceable void.

Some pets are lost to illness, or accidents, and then there are stories like Andrés’, where the choice is made to ensure the pet’s safety.

On a chilly February 13th morning, the Xollin shelter discovered a puppy at their entrance.

But it wasn’t just the puppy that caught their attention; it was a note from young Andrés.
The note read:

“My name is Andrés and I’m 12 years old. My mom and I decided to leave him to you. All of this is behind my dad’s back, because he was thinking of selling him. But he is always beating and kicking the dog. Once he kicked him so hard that his little tail got injured. I hope you can help him and take care of him. Here is a plush toy so he won’t forget me.”

The shelter, deeply moved by the note, took to Facebook to share Andrés’ plea.

“Someone left this dog at the door of the shelter, inside a box, with a plush toy and a note. The note was written by a kid and he explained his dad was always beating the dog and was planning to sell him. So, in such a state of despair, he left the dog here to save him.”

The post resonated with many, leading to an outpouring of support.

People from all over wanted to adopt the dog and provide it with a loving home.

And the support wasn’t just for the dog. Many recognized the immense courage it took for Andrés to make such a decision.

With his mother’s help, they ensured the dog would no longer face abuse.

The shelter staff, upon finding the dog and the note, knew they had to act quickly.

“We need to take the dog to the vet so he can check his tail, which apparently is fractured. We also need to remove parasites and get him a check-up. This means more expenses and work for us, but luckily the dog will be safe.”

The shelter named the dog Rene. And while they were inundated with offers to adopt Rene, they couldn’t help but highlight a broader issue.

With countless animals facing abuse, only a few like Rene, whose stories go viral, get rescued.

“If you all opened your heart and your home to all and not only to this dog, all our animals in the shelter would have been already adopted twice. Thanks to the few people who came to the shelter offering their help to protect other animals suffering abuse or being abandoned in our district and surroundings.”

Andrés’ act was a testament to love and sacrifice.

It might have been a painful decision, leaving both him and Rene heartbroken, but it was undeniably the right one.

Today, Rene is recovering, free from harm, and soon, he’ll be with a family that cherishes him.

Let’s hope that many more animals like Rene find their way to safety and love.
