I don’t know about you, but I love sleeping. There isn’t much you can do to get me out of bed smiling in the morning, let alone the middle of the night.
But this adorable two year old had a pretty good reason for leaving his bed in the dark. And the baby monitor recording caught it all on camera.
You see, Finn Knudston has grown up in Richmond, Virginia with a guardian/puppy best friend at his side. The family boxer, Brutus, has been Finn’s cuddle buddy from the start.
Brutus is now four, but still loves hanging out with his little brother. Finn’s parents have caught them napping together since before he could even walk.
So when Finn went to sleep in his bed and left Brutus curled up on the floor beside him, it just wasn’t the same.
He woke up in the middle of the night and groggily climbed out of his bed. Choosing the cold hard floor over his soft mattress so he could snuggle up next to his four-legged bestie. If that’s not love I don’t know what is.
It’s hard enough to get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Now imagine giving up your pillows to get comfortable on the ground.
At least he brings his blankie and his soother with him!
It takes Finn a while to get comfortable and he doesn’t tip toe around to make sure he doesn’t disturb dear old Brutus. After a few minutes of Finn clambering around, Brutus stays totally unbothered.
He doesn’t seem to mind one bit.
Even when there’s a diaper in his face. Now that’s some patience!
Eventually Finn finds a good set up, using his buddy Brutus as a furry pillow. And falls back asleep.
His mom, Paige, told Bored Panda that this isn’t unusual for the pair.
“Whether it be in the dog bed, Finn’s bed, or the floor, the two always sleep together.”
Obviously when Paige woke up and went to Finn’s room and found him on the floor with the dog, she was curious. So she pulled the recording from the camera and was delighted to find the adorable footage of him clumsily making his way down to Brutus.
(And I’m delighted that she shared it with us!)
Brutus sometimes made his way up to Finn, too. He started crawling up to sleep next to fin, always on the outside like he was protecting the little guy from falling out of bed.
“Finn sleeps with Brutus all night, every night. Whether it’s in the dog bed, Finn’s bed or the floor — the two always sleep together.” – Paige Knudston told The Dodo
But lately Finn has been moving to the floor to be next to Brutus.
Paige thinks part of the reason Brutus is so protective of Funn, is because he can sense Finn’s frailty. He was born with a heart defect that required multiple surgeries when he was just 11 days old.
“it was as if Brutus just knew Finn needed some extra close monitoring and he has been by his side ever since.”
And it’s not an unreasonable thing to believe. Dogs are incredibly intuitive!
There are various kinds of support dogs, including seeing eye dogs, Autism support dogs, and even dogs that can smell a seizure warning for epileptics. They then help their owners get to a safe space. Pretty amazing!
Finn’s parents can be sure he’s in good hands (paws?) when his guardian Brutus is around.
