Animal workers and rescuers are some of the most selfless people in the world. They put in serious time to ensure that animals worldwide are safe and have the love and care they all deserve.
Some of the toughest rescues result in the most incredible stories.
Animal rescues take different forms, and some of them are quite dramatic. The story of Betsy the pit is one of the most dramatic stories of animal rescue you might ever hear!
Betsy lived a life of pain and abuse.
As a pit bull, Betsy was bought by her owner for one thing: to fight other dogs. Good fighting dogs have aggression and a lack of natural fear of other dogs. Betsy didn’t make the cut. She was too gentle and loving to make a good attack dog.
Since Betsy didn’t make a good attack dog, she was used in another role.
A bait dog is a dog that is sent before a fight to get all the fighting dogs riled up. Essentially, they are pieces of meat that the bigger dogs maim to get their bloodlust going. To be frank, bait dogs don’t last very long.
When Betsy was finally found, she was in terrible condition.
The gentle and loving dog wasn’t doing well. She had injuries all across her body and things didn’t look good. Some of the wounds were so severe that the medical team wasn’t even sure if she would survive.
Regardless, they got to work in surgery.
With the number of wounds across her body, the biggest concern was an infection. You can stitch a wound; it’s the bacteria you need to worry about. All through this, Betsy was in pain but still hung on to life. She was a little miracle, even if her odds were low.
Slowly but surely, Betsy pressed on.
Even though this poor dog was abused and hurt, she still wanted love. She knew that the people around her cared for her and wanted the best for her. For a sick dog, that was the best medicine one could ask for.
Eight surgeries and months of treatment later, she started to heal.
Betsy was surrounded by people who loved her and spent time with her. As the healing process went on, more than just her body healed, her heart did too. Finally, it was time for her to go up for adoption.
When Betsy went up for adoption, a family immediately came forward to adopt her!
From bait dog to family dog, little Betsy was finally getting what she deserved. She now has a sibling (another dog) and loves to go on adventures with her family!
One of her favorite things to do is fish in the stream near their house.
While she doesn’t catch anything, she loves to play and adventure in the stream near her new house. Even more, she has a little boy that has her whole heart. Her rough journey has finally come to a much-needed close. She will spend the rest of her life with her best friends and family as a loving dog!
